FlyingToIst - I live in SEA and commute to PDX with OO so PM me if you want some specifics on the commute. I haven't gotten on a QX flight in more than a year. Tired of hearing that I was number 40 something on the list. The jumpseat isn't really available on the Q200 for weight reasons and as Dave said, hardly a day goes by when they don't cancel a couple. In addition, with flights every half hour they have constant revenue bump ups.
OO has about 8 flights a day now so that usually works out. They are full at certain times. Anyway, flying really doesn't save any time. If I am flying, I leave my house about an hour earlier and return about 45 minutes earlier than if I am driving so it is pretty much a wash. Get yourself a fuel efficient car (mine gets 41mpg) and some books on tape and the drive is fine. From my house just north of downtown, the fastest I have ever done the drive is 2hours and 42 mins. Usually it's about a 3 hour drive. Not that bad.
As for reserve - well, I was hired at a time when there was ZERO movement in PDX so I sat reserve for 14 months. I drove half way to Chehalis, spent the day in my car, drove home. Got a routine down, wake up, read the paper, have a sandwich, go to the Library, make some phonecalls, go for a run, before you know it, time to go home. I was home everynight by 5pm. Not everyone's cup of tea however.
These days, lots of movement at the bottom of the PDX list though so should be a lineholder before too long, probably holding four day trips going over the weekend. Lots of check airmen in PDX though so with the current hiring splurge you might see lots of displacement if you are lucky.
Just don't plan to be a Captain in PDX this lifetime unless something major happens. Most recent guy awarded has been here almost six years. As for the commute out of SEA to places like DEN or SLC, I hear different things, some say it's easy - some say horrendous. Either way, commuting sucks.
