I am trying to get some real world info and make a few life decisions here. You guys are the best source I've found, so I figured I'd just post - somethign I normally don't do. Forgive me if the info has already been posted - I wanted to get the most current info and find it all in one place.

What are most of the new hire classes getting for domiciles?

How is seniority in a class determined?

How long is training, and is there a preset scedule?

What are the typical upgrade times?

If you are hired into the RJ, can you upgrade into the EMB120 (I heard there was something weird about that)?

What is the typical month on reserve yielding for hours?

How long are new hires on reserve in DEN typically?

Any other info you may have that you think would be useful would also be appreciated.

My story is that I see the writing on the wall at UAL, and I've been running my own business since being furloughed in January of '03. I miss flying, and thought that someday, UAL would make it out of this mess and I could go back. Now I worry they won't, and since I haven't been flying, I am pretty much unmarketable in the industry. We are EXTREMELY lucky as furloughees to have an opportunity to work at the regionals through an agreement that deals with hiring UAL guys per RJ ordered. I figured I should take it to make sure my career as a pilot doesn't get totally buried.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Randy

I believe most go to ORD or DEN.

Seniority is determined by the last 4 digits in your SSN. A low number is good. High is not so good.

Training is about 2 month from ground school through the end of IOE. Each class does have a schedule but you bid on times for sim training based on class seniority. IOE is sceduled for you and you don't get to pick that.

Typical upgrade times...the earliest I could have upgraded in the EMB was 2 years 4 months. For the RJ the earliest for me was 3 years 8 months. It always fluctuates. Now RJ upgrade went as low as 14 months I heard. I don't think that will stay like that though.

You can upgrade into the EMB after your one year seat lock is up if your seniority can hold it.

Typical reserve guarantee is 75 hours. Some break it some don't.

Don't know about newhires on reserve in DEN.

Hope that helps.

It certainly helps, thanks!

If anyone has any specific info on Denver, please share. I also heard something about the UAL guys being behind any of the off the street guys in new hire class. Anyone know how that works? I have a great SS#, so it would be great if that was a rumor.

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

It's true. as a UAL furloughee you'll be at the end of the class, in order with any fellow UAL folks you start with. we had two in class, and they were the last two. I flew very little on reserve in ORD, but most if not all of my class only did 1 or 2 months of reserve, including all those that went to DEN. A ton of CA upgrades were just awarded to ORD and DEN, so it would seem newhires will continue to get those bases and expect short time on reserve.

another note I'm not sure if you're aware of: your union ponied up some dough to help guys like you out, so you'll get 2nd year pay during your first year (skywest pay of 19.02 plus the difference kicked in from your union). that will help a ton, even though it is of course a pay cut from what you used to make.

best of luck, PM me if you have more specific Q's.
