First off, you have to be kidding me right! What kind of WTF question is this.

"Interview experience:
Heres a gimme on the mechanical aptitude test, a home-made Skywest question found on ever single version of the test: A Brazilla departs ABC airport doing 240kts. 2 hours later a CRJ departs the same airport doing 480kts. How long until the CRJ catches the EMB? Easy but saw many "scribbles" on the tests with wrong answers next to them."

My answer: They don't ever hit because the question does not say which direction the airplanes are headed, what altitude etc.... And if IFR they will always be under positive radar contact and will not get close. Is your TCAS mel'd also?

Yeah, if I can do this problem I can learn systems, fly an ILS and be a people person. Silly thing!

Well to do 240, the E120 would have a 45 knot headwind and to do 480 the CRJ would have almost a 40 knot tail wind. So me thinks you are right, they are going different directions. Also, which crew got extended on the last leg of a four day?

The question says how long until the CRJ catches the EMB, not how long until they collide.

And it is 4 hours from the original EMB departure time.

It is a weed out question, and with the answer you came up with, you would be weeded out.

that is not a very hard question for a weed out question

It was a sarcastic comment for such a stupid answer. This being flightinfo, I knew there would be some bozo who thought it was a serious statement. At least now we know that bozo's name.

ReportCanoa, I did the problem so that the EMB-120 had beverage service, the CL-65 had the goldfish along with beverage service. Of course the reason it is a trick question is that the RJ has a jumpseater.

I wonder how many guys with "scribbles" didn't just reduce the numbers to 1 kt and 2 kts to work it out in their heads.

2 hrs after the CRJ departed to catch up with the EMB.

But I'm not a math guy.

EDIT: I remember a buddy who works for a regional now who used to call me when he was at Riddle (or ND)? who needed help with long division.

Was this also one of the questions:

Pilot A at Skywest flies the 50 seat CRJ while Pilot B flies the 90 seat version. Which one has the bigger paycheck at the end of the month?

Correct Answer: Pilot A is flying a little more time then pilot B because Pilot B is still rather junior on the larger aircraft. It doesn't take much time over pilot B at Skywest for Pilot A to have a larger paycheck because the payscales are so similar even if the passenger liability is so much greater.

or how about

If you were offered Koolaid or a Guiness, which should you choose?

Correct Answer: Koolaid - At Skywest our management does it better then just about anyone else convincing pilots they don't need union representation.

Weeded out....from a commuter airline? That's ironic.

What do they do for the real tough personnel decisions.....make the CFIs do 8s on pylons???
