I am currently attending ground school for SkyWest and I will need to bid for a base soon. I live in San Francisco and would like to know if anyone from San Francisco is based at Fresno and how he/she is coping with the life style.

In terms of commutability, it doesn't get much better. Many flights are available from/to SFO and it is even drivable if you need to. The quality of the trips are so-so somtimes and better other times, but you will have a chance to see what suits you on reserve before you are committing yourself to the PBS bidding. If you are on the CRJ, you can also consider DEN or even ORD. DEN has the best commutable trips of all the domiciles though.

There are a lot of flights between the two cities, but they always seem to be full when I want a ride.

I also live in san fran near Noe Valley. I was lucky enough to buy a home 6 years ago straight out of college during the dot com boom. Then i decided to be a pilot!

I used to commute between san fran and fresno. I can tell you now that it gets considerably tougher during winter time, especially with the bro. I normally drove and it is a nice 2 and a half hour drive. The hassle of jumpseating is not there and it is a little more relaxing. For early morning shows, crash in the crew lounge. They have 3 sofas and a shower room and there are usually people always crashing out on sofas.

The commute is tough but i would try catching flights early. The best thing is that if you dont make the flight, you can always drive. As i said earlier, i did it for a year and hated it.

thank you all it helps me to know what to expect. and you are right I am on the EMB 120. I can live on sofas for a while, better than on the street I guess.

Just drive it. Not that big a deal. There are plenty of commutable pairings in FAT. If you have an early show, just go to bed early the night before and do the drive. Nice and peaceful without doing "car battles" with the Bay Area commuters. Plus, during the winter time, keep in touch with dispatch/crew support the night before. If the aircraft doesn't make it into FAT the night before (Tule fog), you can chill out at SFO while your crew deadheads in. I'd pick the drive to FAT any day over reserve! Hope that helps.

Saw some apartments in Burlingame that were very cheap, advertised on my last SFO overnight..not sure exactly if it was a safe after to live in.

For commuters, is there any sort of policy that if you cant make it by show time, like you tried 2-3 flights before, but couldnt get on? Do they count you as a no show, or say hey get there...when you can? They just dont pay you for what you missed...or anything like that?

There is no commuter policy at SkyWest.
