DOT rankings mean JACK. Too many variables. Your numbers can be skewed one way or the other dependant upon where you operate, weather, flow control, etc.
I have flown quite a bit on all the majors, and most of the "first tier" regionals (or nationals for my fellow regional pilots with the often mentioned inferiority complex). To be quite frank, within reason I could care less whether or not the flight departs within 5 minutes of schedule. I rarely check a bag so that is not a big issue to me either.
What really counts is how I am treated by the employees. From the ticket counter to the gate house, to the jet way, and the flight attendants. If were gonna be late just keep me informed as best as you are able and let me know with some degree of honesty what is going on. If you treat me nice I am easy to please.
I can say that without ANY DOUBT, SkyWest is far and away the best regional I have traveled on. From the minute you show up till the munute you get your bag and split, everyone is pleasant, helpfull, and make travelling on their airline a pleasure.
Now that I have flown into SLC as a DCI carrier, I have noticed that this extends to their ground operations as well. All the ground folks their in SLC are helpfull, friendly, and run their station like professionals who care about the image the present to the passengers and to fellow DCI employees.
On my last couple trips through SLC the skipper and I went and visited their crew lounge. Very nice and all the crews were friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We went and visited ops. We had a chance to shoot the bull with their ops folks who showed us around and we had a great time.
As any of my fellow ASA pilots could attest, if another airlines pilots dropped by ATL ops to say hello and visit they would be looked at like they were from outer space. Don't feel bad anyone, we work there and most of them treat us no better.
As for the ramp operation in ATL, I won't even go there. Suffice it to say it is a less than stellar performance on any given day. Little attention is payed to professionalism, and customer service is abhorrent. Of late things have improved somewhat, and I know the company is trying. I hope the effort continues. There is no reason why it could not be like SLC, if they wanted it to be.
All the DCI carriers could take a lesson from SkyWest. It is a top notch airline.
Just tone down they "Hooray for us, we're number one" routine. That is all. Let the job you do, and the quality of your product speak for itself. Trust me, customers notice and so do the rest of us.
