im a new pilot at cape air and have agreed to stay here until October. I have A SkyWest Interview coming up and if I gett the job i am wondering if I should leave a job that I already have. Im also told that cape air is getting Brasillas. I m worried about getting furloughed and not having a job when i could just stay here and fly the same plane. Any input would be helpfull. Tahks Don Juan.

It's all about bases, pay, upgrade time and if you're willing to commute forever. I don't know too much about cape air, but skywest is a good place to be from what I hear; you can certainly make a career of it. Can you do that at cape air? Are you positive capeair is getting brasilias? We all know how rumors are in this industry. In the event capeair really does get brasilias, it may be awhile before you can hold it if you're a newhire, so be prepared to stay on the 402 for awhile. Just weigh the options...how important is turboprop time to you. Do you have asperations to fly a jet? (I doubt capeair will fly jets anytime soon;skywest does) Are you happy flying in the east/carribbean? Do you commute or do you live in your base. If you live in the east and want to stay there, you'll have to commute to the western US.. Jumpseating/commuting isn't as easy as it used to be. I commuted for years before all this security business and it sucked then even. Ask yourself all of those questions. Consider yourself pretty lucky to get a skywest interview!!! Maybe some of the skywest guys on here can give you better insight on how the company is doing and working conditions, etc....I wouldn't worry about being furloughed from skywest. Theres several skywest threads on here, too... good luck!!

also, if you promised capeair that you'll stay with them until october, it's probably best to stand by your word and not leave until then, because more than likely, capeair may not give you too good of a recommendation if you leave them high and dry. You never know when you may be crawling back to a previous employer. But then again, with how slow things are right you, you may not even get a class date until after October!!

I can't anything about Cape Air, but like the previous poster said, rumors are rumors. Also, another way to think about it, if you get the job at SkyWest, can Cape Air "promise" NOT to lay you off before October no matter what happens??? I didn't think so. It's a different way to look at the situation!!! If you don't have a indentured servitude contract with them, don't hesitate to come to SkyW if you get the job. There are alot of "lifers" here and not because they couldn't get the job at a major, or because of the pay. The pilots are treated very fairly by management, considering the curent environment, and the flying is great. We have Brasilias and CRJ's, and rumors are sounding like something else soon.

Good luck with the interview, we NEED pilots right now!!!

SkyWest would be my choice without even a second thought if I was in your position. I find it extremely hard if not next to impossible to even "attempt" to compare these two companies and right there would be my first signal to take the job at SkyWest if your interview goes well, which I hope it does. I personally would find it much much more desirable and alluring to fly a CRJ or EMB120 over a 402 not to mention the differences in route structure and perks that you would be able to get at SkyWest. Seems like a great company to be with present day.

Funny- I just read the same post, and thought how I would much rather be flying a 402 hrough the Caribbean than a friggin' RJ on a feeder route!!

If they paid the same, and had the same net effect on my career, I'd take the CAribbean hands down.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just a yoke and throttle operator.

Good Luck!

.....

Keep in mind that you class date could be months after your interview date. I interviewed 12/00 for a 3or4/01 class date and actually attended class in 8/01 and I've heard of longer waits.

SkyWest v. keeping your word

SkyWest would be a great place to be for all the reasons given above. The only concern I would have is about keeping your word. Your word is your bond. You should still go to the interview, but don't count your chickens before they hatch. As others stated, it could be months before you get a class date, which could segue nicely into the end of your Cape Air commitment. Or else you could come to a later class date. Or else you could work it out with Cape Air.

Good luck with your interview.

Didn't I see a thread last year about the Cape Air pilots becoming organized?

Maybe that would have an effect on your decision.

No offense but that question belongs in the No More Stupid Questions thread.

Man, glad that you are so worldly and wise, with your whopping 2300tt. It's all black and white out there, isn't it?

They say "Ignorance is bliss" and you must be one blissfull a-hole.

Sound like Win Win to me

Looks like you might not have to worry to much. If you get the job just try to defer the class date to past the October deadline. If they want you to come earlier then you might have to make a decision. If this summer does not go well for us in New England IE War and lack of passengers they might give you an early out because they want to reduce payroll. Go to the interview do your best and only worry when you have to. Right now you dont have the job yet so why worry about it. You are not the first person who has left Cape Air to further your Career and you wont be the last. They understand that this is part of the industry. If you dont get the job you still have a paying flying job that will help you get more experience untill the next oppurtunity comes along or better oppurtunities present tnemselves at Cape Air. See you on the HYA Crew Room Couch this Summer.
