What does everyone think? Is Skywest going to slow down in the next year or will they keep hiring/fast upgrade times? Or are they going to be just like the average regional out there soon?
 
To keep the whipsaw alive, once ASA signs their contract expect things to slow down at SkyWest. I don't like it either, but that's the game management will most likely play.
 
Skywest can't train newhires/upgrades fast enough. Once they get out of the classroom there isn't enough sim time available.
 
SkyWest is supposed to hire 700 this year. It may take a long while to upgrade there due to the fact the airline is already huge, the 50 seaters are going to begin going away and many people are happy enough there to make it a career.

My opinion is different from Sweptback. If ASA gets a decent contract SkyWest will continue the transfer of airplanes as soon as they have the staffing to cover the flying. SkyWest pilots are the lowest paid in the industry on the larger small jets - so management wants to put them with the pilots who are willing to fly them for less money.

The whole fee for departure "Express" world is a sinking ship career wise unless your airline has done something to differentiate its product. Republic has done this with the E170 and that is where I would try to go if in your shoes. You might also consider fractionals.

If SkyWest has a base you like, or will hire you before you are qualified at another carrier, it could be the best of what is really a pretty bleak spot in the industry right now.
 
The 50 seaters aren't going away just yet since we are getting them for the Midwest flying. After that I'm starting to wonder if the growth will slow down a bit. There are rumors of other carriers getting Delta flying. And in our latest Jepp revision we were told to remove all of our charts for Mexico. I'm quessing that we won't be doing that flying anytime soon. Of course you never know what SkyWest has up their sleeve. When I got hired I wondered if I was getting on at crappy time because they were just finishing up the largest expansion in the company's history and it looked like the growth would be slowing down. That was when we had only 11 RJs. Obviously I was wrong. So my advice is if you want to work for SkyWest, give it a shot.
 
I thought this thread would be about flying slower in protest of the recent pilot gay (I mean pay) package. Could we all try to be more transparent in titling these threads so I know what to waste my time on? Thank you.

Why protest a pay package WE VOTED IN (not me personally) but its what our pathetic pilot group agreed to do. To protest by screwing the company when we had a chance to show our displeasure and we didnt is just childish and unprofessional.
 
so if a pilot were to get hired here in the next two months could it end up be like AE for example? A good company with high upgrade times?
 
Past performance does not guarantee future results. Etc, etc......

It could turn out to be the best possible move you could make, the worst, or anything in-between.
Make the most informed choice you can, take your chances like everyone else, and hope for the best.

Who, where, what? This DCI bid is one of the best kept secrets in the history of the business, particularly given how many people must know....

My bet is Comair flying the 90 seaters Delta ordered with the seating arrangements in the scope flavor of the day - much to the chagrin of the Comair bashers at mainline.

I'll second that emotion. The Comair pilots may be on the Delta list soon.
 
Kingpin - You are right about the way the mainline guys feel about it, but ALPA could spin it and they would drink up. ALPA is in a mess on the RJDC litigation, Delta's negotiated rates are lower than Comair's and the Comair guys want a future. There are a lot of synergies - and ALPA was arguing to the Court in support of "operational integration." I'm not sure it is likely, but it is possible. Management decides who is on their list and a merger with Comair makes more sense than most of the mergers out there.

The virtual merger where the airlines are operationally integrated, but the pilots are not, is losing its cost justification now that mainline rates are lower than regional pay rates.

A few questions about the Delta 90 seaters.

1. Does mainline have a rate established for 90 seats? If not, any educated guesses what it might be? My guess is somewhere between JB and US.

2. Might it be a more profitable venture for Delta to configure 90 seats paid at higher mainline rates than 76 seats paid at lower regional rates?

3. If offered the chance to fly the 90's, would Delta mainline pilots balk at the chance to reverse the trend of outsourcing larger jets to the commuters?
 
Mexico will still happen. Its very expensive to keep charts in you don't need yet!!

SkyWest will keep this hiring pace for at least this year!!
 
Not right away, but at some point in the future we will. The point about charts that amcnd mentioned was that we had gotten a whole Mexico package for our Jepps that were promptly removed in a later revision. Too expensive to maintain, if we're not going to Mexico in the near future.
 
SkyWest will slow down significantly went Delta buys back ASA and takes back the 700/900's that SkyWest is flying.
 
hmmm...didn't know ASA was forsale. Then again everything is forsale for the right price;)

A clause in the sale agreement to SkyWest says that Delta may buy ASA back for a period of 4 years after the sale. I believe that this is the main reason that the pilot groups have not been integrated.
 
But IT is intergrated. Crew support and Dispatch will be intergrated in the near future. Hopefully middle management will intergrate soon and make a huge dent in management FAT. Trust me, we might be the last group to intergrate but we will intergrate someday.

I cannot find the sales agreement of ASA from Delta to SkyWest any where on the internet. Please post if you have your copy handy. I would love to read it, to see if all these clauses that people shoot their mouths off about really exist.

How exactly can dispatch be integrated when they're dispatching two separate airlines, with two separate FOMs and OpSpecs? That just screams operational integration to me.

I have no idea what Crew Support is, but if it's scheduling, you guys can take ours...

Are you out of your mind? Think about how ridiculous what you're saying is. The sale agreement says no such thing. I've seem the fine print. It only says that Delta has to do certain things and Delta must live up to those obligations for a period of time or else Skywest can sell back ASA to Delta if they don't live up to the contract. I do believe that time has expired and Delta has furfilled it's obligation.
