I heard it said once in a very simple and blunt way......

In single pilot ops:

"If it's your day to die it's your day to die. Come to think of it, if it's the pilot's day to die then I guess it's your day to die too".

It's cheap insurance. SIC's of all flavors can be found readily & inexpensively. At least have someone there to catch your mistakes and land the plane if you choke to death on a corn-nut.
