. Any advise?

well noone can afford to flight instruct..but it is the best way to get time and learn to deal with different personalities in the cockpit...no easy way..sorry

I'm glad we don't have that situation where I work. At the very least, it's not fair to people who would be employed for that position and it's not fair to the captains.

Flight instructing helps develop interpersonal skills (which will help with CRM later in life.) That experience can not be bought.

I've flown with hundreds of CA's, FO's ... and you can always tell which ones never instructed.

You can try flying skydivers. Trust me you still develop interpersonal skills (because they won't leave you alone), but the biggest difference is that you ACTUALLY fly the aircraft and not just sit there on your hands. Plus it is fun and you will learn and do things in the ac that you were always told was not possible and could be dangerous. Depending on where you live you can get between 300-700 hours during the season.

Just a thought

agreed..i don't think anyone one is telling you to instruct for thousands of hours, but it is a good way to build time quickly..the more time you have the more opportunities will become available to you...also in my case while i was instructing one summer during college i gave a guy his BFR and he was a cpt on a lear on the field..his copilot quit the next week and the guy called me to fly the lear for 2 weeks while he looked for a new copilot...i was 19 and in college so it was awesome...also i made friends with a lot of people who had their own planes and they let me use them when i wanted..so there are a lot of benefits to instructing....but that being said...get out as soon as you can...

How can you afford to pay for SIC time -- but you can't afford to be paid for flight instructing?

SIC time at your stage is worthless, IMO. Go fly. And do the entire profession a favor: insist on being paid for it.

yah that.

And people won't be near as inclined to make fun of you then still not give you a job.

I've been flying commercially for almost 25 years and for
my .02 worth, the pilot who builds time actually flying in real IFR, cross country, dealing with all kinds of weather and typical problems and situations, is a better pilot than someone who flies around a traffic pattern all day or watching someone under the hood. Instructing is over rated and there are other options to building time.
