SFR

They would be more likely to wake up in 10 years and say "We Don't want any more Geilo's (Caucasian Expats) - Fire Them All!"...

But who would fly their airplanes for them? We have almost 2000 aircrew, about 10% are local Chinese of whom about 30 are Captains.

Get real - you've been watching (or reading) too much sensationalist crap on CNN or listening to too much Rush Limbauch. Read a little more on Hong Kong post 1997, the Basic Law and the principles of "one country, two systems". If you STILL think that they have a thing against expats, then I can't help you.

The remarkable thing about Hong Kong is the people. The Chinese are smart, resiliant and intelligent people who know a good deal when they see it. Probably the reason why Cathay has so much difficulty recruiting local lads and girls for it's (fully subsidised) cadet pilot scheme. They almost have to hit the streets of WanChai to pressgang locals into the scheme...

Capt. Underpants,

Hasn't the climate in HK changed now that Beijing has taken it back? I would think that might have an effect on the paranoia that SFR is experiencing. BTW, I wondered if you might share that info you PM'd to Lear with me as well.

I, too, have considered Cathay and was given an application. I have kept that app in my top drawer and have been meaning to fill it out, but I am seriously concerned about signing a three year deal. After that three years is up, what is to stop them from saying thanks for your time but we will not be retaining you any longer?

Why would the locals not want to fly there?

BTW, I sent in my app today, so I guess they will get in in a week or two.

What is an expat? Pardon my stupidity but I really don't differentiate between anyone. We are all earthlings right?

I am white (actually tan), darker than my mexican wife and they say that I am not a minority!!!! Ha!!!

Who would discriminate against Americans anyway? I though we do all the discrimination!!!!!

Someone said earlier on this thread that they (british) think that us Americans are too cavalier or laid back. Well I think that is a sign of natural flying skill. The people that take it too serious are trying to make up for a lack somewhere else!!! Besides the other countries dont have Jimmy Buffett music to listen to.

Typhoon--Thanks for all the good info, as usual!

Keep in mind that retiree medical at the U.S. carriers is at the whim of the company, the CBA or the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court. It could change at anytime. Remember, this is aviation and things can change at any time.

Good luck, all.TC
