The Delta 777 FO who drove on to the taxiways and runway of a grass airport to his big DC-3 and was stopped by the Mayberry Barney Fife Code Enforcement Officers was perceived as a national security threat. The size of a DC3 scares the crap out of TSA, DHS, local police, and especially code enforcement officers. Dan was as dangerous as a 911 terrorist with a weapon of mass destruction. NOT!

And yet, pilot after pilot here agreed with every word of a sensationalized news article presenting 1/3 of the true in an extreme manner to convict an innocent until proven guilt man in an effort to sell ad space and copy to an uneducated scared general public. Pilot after pilot here on FI are more than happy to rat out someone to the Gestapo if they are jealous. Pilot after pilot here have no idea what the US Constitution says, care about freedom and liberty over security and imprisonment, and are more than happy to live life in a glass bowl full of web cams recording their every move.

Absolute power... FAA and the TSA only have it if we allow it -- Title of a current news article by Earl Lawrence. "Several House of Representative members supportive of general aviation have introduced House bill 3678 in an attemp to ensure the department of Homeland Security (DHS) does not continue to have an absoute power to issue security directives that severly impact aviation.

An example od DHS uncheck authority is SD 1542-04-08F issued December 2008 and modified in June of this year. That directive requires commercial airports to revamp their general aviation ramp security procedures to include background checks, idenitification badges, and personal escorts to and from aircraft. This SD was issued without input from the GA community and despite the lack of any imminent security threat. SD 1542-04-08F applied a "one size fits all" response to a transportation sector- GA- even in the absence of a credible or immediate threat."

Has anyone here on FI heard of America the Land of the Free? What does these words mean? No one here acts in a manner consistent with American values.

Choose your battles carefully. Picking an airline pilot who went rogue in a DC-3 at a public airport in the presence of armed security is probably not the best example for an indicment of TSA/DOH. Also, I agree with many of your points, particulary concerning SD 1542-04-08F, but I don't blame other pilots (who are not lawyers) for not rallying to defend this guy. Events like this are bad enough for our public image.

You are correct. The defense of this guy is to be decided by a court not public opinion askew by media half truths.

But my larger point is we are taking our freedoms for granted leaving them in the hands of the Gestapo who are not protecting, serving or keeping the American life and liberty free as it was designed to be and in contrast to the rest of the world. And through our silence and support of rogue security in the name of protection out of fear we are losing everything which has made America great.

Unjustified security and media fear mongering is the order of the day as everyone sits idly by waiting for everyone else to be taken under control until the day they come for you. I have seen this first hand. One guys pet peeve becomes another mans nightmare for trivial reasons at the hands of liberal power grabs and I bet this story has many of those elements not being reported or discussed here in the rush to judgement and conviction before the case is even heard.

America needs less police and more guns in the hands of the general law abiding population. And Code Enforcement Officers don't prevent mass murder, armed innocent civilian by-standers with accurate knowledge at the scene do.

I am not afraid of a man who owns a DC3 as many in the media would have everyone believe to sell copy.

Don't forget that the TSA can also confiscate your laptop for no apparent reason-

From the first paragraph-

Federal agents may take a traveler's laptop computer or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.

They finally got rid of that pesky 4th amendment.....

Funny how you guys are all concerned about your pesky rights now that Obama's in office. But when liberals complained about the "Patriot" Act.... A different story.

But relax... It'll take some time to undo what the neo-con fascists you guys elected did.

I have always enjoyed states rights cause if you don't like it you can always leave and still stay in america, in a state that shares your same views. The problem is the damn pesky federal government withholding money until states all do what the fed wants them to. The South should have won the states Rights war

Yep-

Defending that crazy pilot is just nutty... Poor choice of battles. As anyone and everyone with any sense knows-you always accept the citation and say "thank you officer-have a great day." You can fight it out in court later-and you will not have obstuction of justice, assault, and resisting arrest charges to fight as well. Any reasonable person would have accepted all those citations and hired a decent lawyer-probably would have made the code guy look like a nut and may have had all the citations dismissed. Instead-this jackwad got hauled to jail on felony charges, made all pilots look like even bigger idiots to the general public, and may well get fired. (One can only hope.)

-The real kicker for me is this guy's mugshot-he is grinning to beat the band... Like he is proud of trying to drive over some cops (alledgedly).... Amazing:
http://www.wsbtv.com/news/21598678/detail.html
(I know-innocent until proven guilty and all, but don't you think these guys have some video from their cars?) I sure would love to see that!

However-the second point, about the TSA and the laptops is just frightening. Amazingly-they cannot pick up a stack of books out of your bag and rummage through them looking for anything. It is crazy that they need you permission to look through a bag, but can rummage through your laptop at will, just because it is an electronic device.

Seriously-i have a lot of faith in the rationality of a majority of Americans- so I'll just say that the people who have taken over the republican party are the democratic party's wet dream. Not so good for the country, but it'll keep the lesser of two evils from my point of view in power a lot longer.

What is your point?
-Liberals have been calling the shots in the Republicans party for years. Ultra-liberals have been in charge of the democrat party for years as well. Are you saying "less liberal" is the greater of two evils.....

-I have a hard time seeing people like McCain as conservative-by any stretch.

So why didn't the guy just accept the citations the cops wrote him and hire a lawyer to get them thrown out of court? Honestly, some of these guys out there need to attend anger-mgmt courses. Pick the path of least resistance. When a TSA prick gives me grief, I speak up... to a point. Eventually I realize it's easier to shut up, let him do his job and move on. Now if my rights are violated, I'll file a report or charges. But to fight every battle in life.. honetly, it's a collassal waste of time.

This is the new world we live in. Face it.

right. Proved my point. The village idiot has taken over. Ie- fundamentalist extremists like yourself. And you're absolutely awful for the country and the world. You're an American conservative version of the Muslims we're at war with. No room for anyone who doesn't think or believe just like you. Which polarizes everyone- people either conform or have to defend themselves- creating conflict everywhere you go.

Nice
