I'm sitting at home on reserve and I get called up at 12:50 for a trip with a duty-in at 1600. Ok fine. I can't make that no problem. Two minutes later scheduling calls back and says, "disregard we found somebody who is already at the airport for that trip."

I put myself in that pilots position and thought dang, he's probably on a trip right now hoping he will get to go home but he'll get the ol' "FO needs to call crew scheduling." I know this kind of thing happens, and hopefully he is a lower seniority than me, but I've just never had them assign me a trip and then say never-mind, we'll just screw the guy who is already at the airport.

Maybe they had a ready-reserve and had forgotten about him?

I got one of those "Would you be willing to help crew scheduling" messages on AFIS a few weeks back. I politely turned them down. It was the last day of the trip and we'd had a tough 4 days and I was beat tired. I wasn't about to prolong my day.

BTW, I like your avatar. It reminds me of the Langley airport on Whidbey Island, WA.

LOL!!! Screw the other guy.... you got to stay home.
Don't worry, next time it'll be you.

What's wrong with the picture? You got to stay home and bang momma one more night.

We don't have ready-reserve.

I'm happy not to go in. And, you're right, it probably will be me next time. It's happened before and it'll happen again.

How many hours do you all get paid for flying a reserve assignment? If the guy they found was another reservist and all he did was a turn worth like 2:20 and you all get paid 4 hours than it was cheaper to have him fly another trip than to pay you both 4 hours for maybe 5 hours of total flying. That would be my explanation of it.

First there is a guarantee, at asa it is 75 hours. If they fly over that, it depends how long they have been there and get their hourly rate. A 2nd year fo on the 50 seater gets around 34 dollars. If this person that was on duty already was under the 75 hours, he's doing it for free any way, if you want to look at it like that.
