Read a members quote on the general board that said "' People who use the term "with you" when being handed off from departure to center haven't read the AIM carefully enough. Couldn't find a refrence to it in the AIM. Anyone know where I could find it?

the AIM doesn't say we should start radio comm with "Good afternoon" either but life goes on

dont get too wrapped around the axle over this one

It's kind of a "grey area". Yes, there are guidelines in the AIM for proper radio etiquette but as satpak stated, just about everyone is guilty of throwing in a little "personality". As far as personal preference though, the "with you" does annoy me. I'd like to know where the infamous "AND aaahhhhh" came from. When I first started flying jets, one of my Captains absolutely, forbid saying "for"....as in "descend to four thousand for six four four echo". (obvious emphasis on for/four to argue his logic!) My biggest advice:Keep it simple and take your time. Seems to me, when some people get into high density airspace (NY comes to mind)they try and talk as fast as they can to "keep up". Once you've keyed the mike, the podium is yours. Take your time and clearly state your transmission.

Well saying "with you" may not be in the AIM but saying "over" when expecting a response is (or was the last time I checked).

Incorrect: Boston Center N12345 with you FL310

Correct: Boston Center N12345 FL310 OVER

I would take the wrong one over the right one :)

the infamous "AND aaahhhhh

As stupid as that sounds on the radio, I imagine most don't even realize they are doing it.

Do you ever listen to people on TV while they are being interviewed? You hear a lot of "ah's" and "ya know's" and other such phrases that people just say.

4-2-3. contact procedures

(a) name of the facility being called

(b) Your full aircraft identification

(c) when oprerating on an aircraft surface, state position

(d) The type of message to follow or your request if it is short: and

(e) The word "over" if required

.the proper call would've been..... "Boston Center N12345 FL310"

I wish I could hear a recording of my own transmissions, from the first time that I ever flew to the NE as a green F/O. I'm sure there were quite a few "AND aaaahhhhh's". I do take that into account when I hear someone else who I assume to be a little behind the power curve and therefore don't get "peeved". But, on the same token, I had Captains who taught me how to "trim the fat" on my transmissions. I don't consider an analysis of proper vs improper etiquette to be rude or whiney.

Its also good to remove as much "domestic slang" from your phraseology as possible. When you fly to other countries...even just the caribbean islands...you'll communicate much better with foreign controllers if you use the standard phraseology.

Some foreign controllers only speak aviation english and that's all they will understand so its good to know how things are supposed to sound.

I'm trying to rid myself of "checking in".

I seem to be done with "with you". I mean, where else would I be? Plus after making an ass out of myself enough times by forgetting to switch between Com 1 and Com 2, I refuse to tell tower that I'm "with" approach anymore...

"Ft. Worth Center, Cessna 123, Five Thousand"

"Aircraft calling Ft. Worth Say again."

"Ft. Worth Center, Cessna 123 Checking in...ah **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**it"

So what do y'all say when you get the "aircraft calling say again" thing? Just repeat what you said or bust out a "hello, hello, is this thing on?" ?
