I'm up in Orange County, and when I fly it's out of SNA.

Oh the fond memories.......Cherokee 99W cleared to land 19L, caution wake turbulence from 757 landing 19R. Boy, those suckers were close when on final.

My best memory was soloing at SNA before the new terminal was built and AirCal was still flying.

I'm out of Montgomery Field KMYF, in you guess it San Diego.....

I had an interesting experience near Montgomery many years ago... I was coming down the coast at 500'(helo) inbound to MYF...it was early enough that Miramar wasn't open(and SoCal said nothing would be going on there for another hour at least) yet...and as I was passing off the departure end of their runway, an F/A-18 went screaming about 100' over me. He had apparently seen me and kept it much lower than usual to buzz me. I asked SoCal if they knew about it, they said no...called Miramar tower(which was closed, but people were there)...and Mirimar said..."Tell him the first one is a warning shot"..

MYF alumni, baby! Plus One & Flyers. 172RW :) Have my "MYF" sticker from Marvs on my kit bag. It's a great lil airport...

I also flew ME out of SNA, 31DE & 5008Y.

What's going on at Oceanside airport? I heard that it's being threatened with closure?!

Also I love going to Carlsbad airport.
One of the most interesting sights I have seen there was this elderly couple that got off of a Beechjet. The couple got in to a chauffered (sp?) Rolls Royce, and their two dogs got in to another one.

yeah it's interesting, bassically sharing a traffic pattern with miramar...

haven't heard much about closing oceanside. Hopefully they will keep it, it's the only semi challenging approach in San Diego...
gotta love those 5 T's

Montgomery memories

MYF--

Many moons ago... had ground tuned in and was ready to taxi when I heard a nervous voice on the frequency say, "MM...MM...Montgomery ground, I can't get the FBO on frequency and I need to get the fuel truck over here. Can you call them for me?" The Ground Controller replied, "where are you?" The nervous voice replied, "I'm right under the sign that says... Fightertown USA."

NAS Miramar airshow

in the good ol' days...

Way back when Miramar had the best darned airshow around...I was waiting for an F-14 demo to begin. Having seen the show many times, I knew they usually started this demo with a high speed pass just under Mach followed by a vertical climb. The Tomcat flashed by airshow center without making a sound...pulled his nose up 75 degrees above the horizon and turned into a dot. I had time to think, "oh shi..." before the Kaboom! Broke lots of glass, crying kids, lots of stunned and slack-jawed gawkers... I'm sure the poor guy got in trouble but it was awesome.

Yes, the city council has OKB between a rock and a hard place and a group of vocal residents are trying to get it closed. A few years ago money was approved for improvements (some hangar door are about to fall off), but now the neighbors are taking that as a sign they will expand the airport- not 'improve' it. Someone is lobbying for a mini mall on the site and new housing has encroached on the area just north of the river where zoning for houses should have never been approved. The FBO, Seawinds, has closed (became Orion at CRQ). No fuel is for sale because the FBO was in charge. It's almost a ghost town. That's too bad.

If anyone wants to lend their support, go to the Oceanside Airport Association homepage to find out how.

I got my instrument rating back at NAC at MYF, and I flew for Ameriflight out of MYF (outbased there).
MYF rules!!!

It was so cool to be back there early this week. I got checked out again in a Cessna 172 out there. Talk about fun...

Speaking of noise whiners, it was priceless the other day flying out of SNA. I was going home from the sim, and the captain got on a PA to tell the passengers that in order to serve them at SNA, we're required to do a steeper than normal climb followed by the power reduction... it's a safe FAA-approved procedure.. yadda yadda. Shoulda heard the rash of complaints: "Why do they have to do that?" "That's not right!" "Is it safe?" to our flight attendants. Then right after takeoff and cutback, you heard the same people go like... ohmygod! Whats wrong?

It was absolutely hillarious... Should have referred them to SNA Noise Abatement council or whoever put that in place.

I instructed at NAC a number of years ago. I understand nug is still running the show on a daily basis. He has to be in his early 90's by now.

It was mostly the people who live south of the airport. Enough rich people complained about the horrible noises, and they started making some changes.

I work about 1/4 mile north of SNA, and jets fly over my office all day. I don't get it, I think it's great!:p

You know.. I'd love nothing more than to fly an old B737-200 without hushkits at max power over those noise monitors out there... Maybe I'd get lucky enough to break them all. :D

Russ... yep, I saw Nug out there. He's still around, and Carlos the Chief Flight Instructor too. What year were you there?

The problem with that is, SNA has banned operators from using the field in the past once they hit a certain dB a certain number of times. So, if you were banned, then you'd have to fly to OAK ALL the time. Isn't variety good for you -700 guys?

The -200s have hushkits? Tell my ears that...wait, I can't hear you over the roar in the cockpit.

C'mon English... let me just daydream about this for a minute. :)

Our -200's are exempt from hushkits since we fly them outside of CONUS.... hence your deafness. ;)

Ya know...I've always hoped that if the day comes that I lose an engine at V1 in a jet...it happens at SMO or SNA....just so I can blast over all those rich preppy MF'er houses with one engine going full power making all the noise I can! Of course....I would find it necessary to level off at 400' until I pass the shoreline at either of those airports....:D

You know, what's REALLY irritating about the whole situation at SMO is that when SMO was first constructed, there was nothing around it. I've seen pictures of the airport and it's surrounding neighbors from the early days, and there was nothing around it. So, everyone that decided to build near the airport KNEW the airport was there. Then, when the original owners sold their homes, the prospective buyers were REQUIRED to be informed of the airport's existence. So, why all the fuss? It's like marrying a guy and then trying to change him after the fact - all you'll get is a big headache and less sex.

Off the soapbox now, my ears hurt...

Used to live in SD, still go up to MYF and fly BE76 on my FAA license when on layovers in SAN, wich happens quite regulary...

Anyone knows if the windsock down by SAN is still open?

I've spent a little (2400 hrs) time flying out of Montgomery. ...And I have to agree that there is no better airport to get up close and personal with F-18's. I've had my share of "wing waves" over Torrey and on the downwind for 28R.

Anyone knows if the windsock down by SAN is still open?

Unfortunately it's closed indefinitely. :-(

Yes, it is closed. Not only that, they tore it down. The family that owns Jimsair was planning a huge remodel in time for the Superbowl in SAN a few years ago. They tore out the whole front of the building the FBO lobby & resturant upstairs were located in and never got it rebuilt. They are still in their temporary facility setup after all this time. Too bad. It was by far the best bacony view! Plus Dino the bartender made great "El Dinos" complete with a tattered drink umbrella....
