I instruct out of Gillespie (SEE) and fly traffic watch out of MYF. Personally I find Gillespie to be a much more user-friendly airport (far fewer delays, more accomodating controllers). Plus Gillespie has 20% more VFR days than MYF since the marine layer usually doesn't roll in past Cowles mountain... often leaving MYF with a 200 ft overcast in the morning while SEE enjoys clear skies!

SOCAL approch.. best controllers in the USA!!

yeah one of those socal APP chicks was totally riding my a$$ today

Dang Freight Dog I didn't know you were and ex-MYF boy! you got the right idea going back there and getting checked out...i am going to have to go do that myself too.

It was by far the best bacony view! Plus Dino the bartender made great "El Dinos" complete with a tattered drink umbrella....

ahh good ol' "El Dino's"...yeah those were good times. don't miss working there, though (or at least downstairs). yeah, it's a shame they tore it down...i would love to go back there.

Grew up under the North downwind for SMO. Got my Private outta there in '88. Screw the whiners: I want the TPA lowered so I can take better pictures when I visit my folks.

Did everything else in 98/99 outta SEE with ATP. I've always loved flying SoCal. From the Shoreline Route over LAX, to the Elephant Bar in SBA, to that mexican place at MYF (is it still there?). Used to be able to shoot the VOR into Oceanside in my sleep.

I'd love to dive bomb the casino off I-8 again, naturally done whilst practicing emergency descents. Also remember doing an ILS into MYF one day, then special VFR'ing it back to SEE, my instructor and I weren't paying much attention and landed on the wrong ...

So how about that LDA into SEE? Yeah, that was fun.

Ha! I flew a 182 out of SNA for about a year doing aerial photography and we set the darn noise monitors off. There is one just to the southwest of the runway about a quarter of a mile I think just south of the 73 freeway! "Early right turn approved!"

Anybody here old enough to remember flying into Catalina when they charged you $20 a plane load? Carolyn at CRQ? ( the nicest controller in the world), breakfast at Big Bear? Pancakes at Ocotillo?

Did most of my pre-airline (read fun) flying out of CRQ (Carlsbad) back in the days before Kieth turned to the dark side at Four Winds. Nothing better than SoCal flying. I hate the flying out east. Nothing on the ground worth looking at comparatively...except for some of the MILF's as they board (g).

You know, what's REALLY irritating about the whole situation at SMO is that when SMO was first constructed, there was nothing around it. I've seen pictures of the airport and it's surrounding neighbors from the early days, and there was nothing around it. So, everyone that decided to build near the airport KNEW the airport was there. Then, when the original owners sold their homes, the prospective buyers were REQUIRED to be informed of the airport's existence. So, why all the fuss? It's like marrying a guy and then trying to change him after the fact - all you'll get is a big headache and less sex.

Off the soapbox now, my ears hurt...

Only your ears hurt?

The DC-3 was built in SMO, now they can't operate there. Too noisy...

Oceanside

What's going on at Oceanside airport? I heard that it's being threatened with closure?!QUOTE]

Live in Oceanside, fly out of CRQ for the most part.

Last I heard Oceanside City Counsel was talking about expanding the airport. Mostly just hanger space and finding a new FBO for it. Since Sea Winds got the boot a few years back, traffic has reduced. Mostly it is just private owners there now. I think Oceanside saw just how much revenue the airport was generating. Ha-ha, shouldn't have listened to those two old ladies who complained. It would be nice if they do build it up a bit. But I don't see them improving the runway, would just invite larger (read noisier) planes. The city counsel wants more business with less noise.... As does every city in SoCal it seems.

'nuther MYF alum here, did my Private outta Sorbi's. (Yeah, yeah...I know...now.)

Nothing like turning crosswind and being nose-to-nose with a Hornet that just broke off initial...certainly grabbed my attention the first time that happened!

Lessee, fun MYF experiences....flustered newbie controllers, following that dude in the red Stearman in the pattern (I still don't think he knows what the TPA is there), coming over JLI on my 2nd solo XC, only to find myself "VFR on top" (hence the screen name), and the numerous joyrides up the coast to SNA and SMO...some of the most enjoyable flying imaginable. My only regret is never making a run to Catalina while flying out of there.

They're kinda stingy with it nowadays, but the South Point Loma transition to SDM is one of the best treats in aviation! (For the uninitiated: when it's available, Lindbergh Tower will clear you down the beach at or below 500', under their departure path, to South Point Loma, where you switch to NAS North Island Tower, who'd then clear you through their airspace usu. at 800' across the San Diego bay toward a particular crane at one of the Navy piers, then cut you loose to proceed to Brown. Absolutely awesome views, especially for the pilot! :) )

Eh, I was more into Anna, but I hear she had some substance abuse probs IRL so the producers cut her out of the show. Mischa Barton does nothing for me. Maybe if she got some cans.... :D

Did most of my flight training at KMYF, both JAA and FAA. Great flying in SOCAL, and the best ATC.

Going to the states on vacation next week, have to visit my old flight school and pick up some new books at marv golden. Marv's is the best pilot shop ive been in so far, cant find anything like it over in europe.
