Reduced Vertical Seperation Minimums.

It's a technical specification that allows aircraft to fly between 29,000 and 41,000 with 1000' seperation, instead of the old 2000' seperation. If you aren't RVSM capable, you have to stay below FL290 or above FL410.

Eagle, thanks for the information. I assume this is similar to the even/odd thousand-foot + 500' intervals for VFR flight??? I think I see what you're saying, but don't see why it would require any special equipment other than an altimiter.......

Hi!

It's because air traffic at those flight levels used to be separated by 2000' minimum vertical separation.

Now, there is only 1000' separation required, so both altimeters, the altitude sensing equipment, the autopilot, the transponder, the equipment that communicates between all of the above and the warning system have to be operating at a much higher level of accuracy than previously.

The typical cost is $150-$400K and beyond per aircraft. Many aircraft are going to be grounded, because it is cost prohibitive to either upgrade the equipment, or fly the planes down below FL290, because of the added fuel and time costs.

I have it now. Thank you.

It is the greatest thing to happen in ATC in 40 years.

Its the only thing to happen to ATC in 40 years. With the exception of the strike of course...:)
