RJ pilots- question

If they have so much thrust at idle, why do so many Pinnacle guys blow us out in the alley in MSP? I'm not trying to start a war, just stating a fact. I saw a Pinnacle guy spin another CRJ in the gate in MSP last December. He laid in so much power that the jet wash spun a plane in the gate so that the nose was 45-degrees to the right. That must have been a hell of lot of thrust.

Again, not flaming... it just seems that you guys taxi with a ton of thrust when we are behind you. Maybe our guys do that in the Avro when they are new, too. I honestly don't know.

Any Flagshippers have an honest answer? Thanks.

Honest answer: Most of our Captains use too much break-away thrust to get moving. No excuses, they just use too much. The DTW line standards manager has been pushing guys not to use more than the recommended thrust settings. Hopefully more of the Captains will start to ease up on the taxi thrust, but I doubt many will.

I taxi fast in the ERJ for a number of reasons:

1. 23 min turn times that require you to be early to get out on time the next flight. Not to mention that most stations don't use jetways and wheelchair pax really slow down turns.

2. Brakes heat up as previously mentioned and TR not authorized below 60 knots.

3. Idle thrust pushes me so fast that the speedbrakes will deploy (25 kts)

4. I'm hungry, gotta crap, or I'm on the go home leg to catch my connection home.

Speeding up and slowing down.......thats probably what the mainline guys hate. Probably doesn't work very well in the Boeings.

If you are really at Comair, I am ashamed. You are the biggest piece or work. I truly hope I don't fly with you as a FO or a Captain. You know that the CRJ takes 2 min before you can shut down the left engine, and you also know that you need to warm up the engine before takeoff. You all so know we can NOT use reverse on taxi, even though a lot of us do. You are truly a waste of my time. Lets just hope we don't fly together.

Taxi out and the guy was hummin. speedbrakes popped 4 times on the taxi out. We crossed 31 and almost went airborne.

I'm like this guy is a friggin clown. I'm figuring 23 year old kid, spiked hair and the backpack lovin his first jet job.

Nope death in the left seat. Guy looked like he was on his last breath. 50+ and I was surprised. I mean jesus not what i was expecting.

Oh and before you flame i'm under 27 and have the seacrest hair.

I don't care how fast you guys taxi as long as you don't get in the way of a salaried man that has 30 drinking days a month built into his schedule.

Just like they taught me at day one at Pizza Hut delivery driver school. Speed happens in the store, not on the road. Leave it up to ramp and gate folks to make your quick turn. If they can't, it's not your problem (notwithstanding trying to get home to catch a jumpseat ride). Support the local block time.

And little planes (ie. RJ's) are smaller than big planes. Duh. There is some kind of weird optical illusion that makes a shorter plane look like it's moving faster than a bigger one at the same speed, something to do with the time it takes to travel it's own length. Ever wonder why a 747 or the like always looks like it's just creeping along the taxiway, or why it looks like it's climbing at 100 knots? There you go.

I've seen 747's taxi at 25+ in ANC, the size is what makes it look slow....

The 200 and 700 share the same door and can be swapped between aircraft types. Didn't ask him if the 900 is the same though.

Uhhhh.... sorry, but the service door on the 700/900 is different from the 200. Look at the exterior handle.

We were talking about the main cabin door. The service doors are diffrent.

I always wondered this same thing. Some of those guys taxi faster than us freight dogs, and that's hard to do.

The aft service door is an option on the 700 and 900 since they use the same fuselage. The cutout is visable though if it's not ordered.

By the way, yes, we do taxi on one engine whenever it's practical. (I wasn't in the habit of doing this regularly...until I saw what Delta paid for gas in '04. Now I'm a believer!) The key word is practical. Mainliners are almost always pushed-back from a jetway and have few problems with single-engine maneuvering. Us RJ folks often have to weave our way into and out of congested parking areas, and it's not easy to do that in a fully-loaded CRJ on one engine without blowing over the rampers or blasting windows out of the building.

And as for "breakaway thrust?" The CRJ is just like every other jet airliner: if you just release the parking brake and wait a few seconds, nine times out of ten, it'll roll. Sure, if you want it to peel out like a Camero, then pop the brake and push it up to 50 or 60%...but why?

Well said. I think everything possible should be done to conserve gas while maintaining a high level of safety.

I taxi single-engine all the time out of DTW. But because what was mentioned earlier we are not allowed to taxi single-engine in the alley in MSP....Plus you should limit thurst below 40% two-engine.... I'm always getting slammed on freq by other RJ driver's and DC-9 guys because I taxi too slow.(Guess I'm practicing for someday when I get hired at AA) I get paid by the hour, the more hours I fly today the less I have to fly at the end of the year!
