I would be very interested to see some real, unbiased numbers of people that were affected by the accident itself.
The area were Chernobyl was based was known for a lot of inbreeding because of the location it was in. In fact I think the biker makes a little note of that too in her report. Aslo if you go find for things wrong with people, you'll find a lot that people already had, but never noticed or paid attention to.
I read in about half the reports that there was a sharp increase in thyroid cancer in people around the site. But other reports say that there was a sharp increase in thyroid-findings in the 4 months following the disaster. It's just that radiation indused thyroid illness won't manifest itself until after 6 months after irradiation. ( note: I'm not a doctor so these numbers can be off, but you get the just of it).
After a while it ended up being about the average population in the rest of the world having the same percentage of thyroid issues.
I'm not sticking my head in the sand for this, and I truly think the pilots who dropped the stuff on the melted core, and the firemen were truly remarkable. Took some ball$ to build that Sarcophagus!! Strange that the people who kept operating the remaining reactors didn't have a lot of issues with radiation illness
I would just like to see an independant review of facts, but I think that will not be possible, too much politics involved in nuclear power issues
