i was reading some posts on here and happened to find a pilot resume service. has anyone had any experience and or comments with these. yes no good bad.
Although I have not used these folks I have a couple of friends who have and said that the service was great and the product was excellent. They can be found at: www.firstflightresume.com
Before the days of Microsoft word, Laser jet printers, and home publishing...I think professional resume services had lot of value.
In this modern age, I am not so sure. Almost ALL major airlines have online applications or pre-printed applications that are screened by computers. If your target is a major, the money spent on a fancy resume might be better spent on more training, etc. I say this for 2 reason. First, you can now create an attractive resume on your home computer that is just as pleasing to the eye as one that has been professionally typeset. Second, I don't think paper resumes are nearly as important as airlines lean so much now computers instead.
If you are trying to get that first corporate job, however, the rules may change. I will say, however, for most airlines the Resume is simply a glorified business card your interviewers can review. JetBlue and SWA are going to ask THEIR questions anyway, not necessarily anything based on your resume. Fedex likewise screens via computer, then your first event at your interview is a simulator eval. Nobody checks a resume at any point later in the process, either. However...if someone is handwalking your package in perhaps a nice resume is a plus. I know my Delta buddies (back in the 60 a month forever day!....weren't those the days?) didn't want my resume....all they wanted was my social to give to Plato II to call you up from UPAS.
Bottom line--a good resume is nice, but it seems your computer app is where the action happens. However...I invite anyone with other opinions or info on other airlines to correct me or add your 2 cents!
Allow me to respectfully disagree, at least if you want to apply to ATA. Out of the 15 people in my new-hire class, I was the only one there that got an app without a rec. I got an app based solely on my resume, and my resume was overhauled by Judy Tarver (www.pilotcounseling.com). She charged me all of $40, and I got the job. 40 pretty well spent dollars, I think. But Albie15's point about computer apps is totally correct, so I guess it depends on who you're applying to. Just my 2 cents...
$40 on a professional resume doesn't sound like much, and it really isn't. However, every time you want to tweak the resume (or have it tailored towards a certain prospective employer), you will have to go back to your resume service and have them make the changes and mail it to you. Perhaps for an additional fee, and the wait time it takes for it to arrive by snail mail.
By contrast, I did my resume myself on my home computer, bought some nice resume paper, and printed it out on my old ink-jet printer. Looked great.
I'm no resume writing expert. Rather, I cheated -- I got my hands on a copy of one of my buddies' resumes, and just copied his format. I just did it in MS Word.
And, by doing it myself on my home computer, I always had the ability to make any changes or updates I wanted, and print it out instantly -- free of charge. Plus, when I travelled, I carried a disk with it in case I needed another copy while on the road, or to email.
