Does anyone know how to renew a passport without getting rid of the old one for two weeks?? I do not want to give up my jumpseat privledges for two weeks because I have to renew this passport. Has anyone run into this problem?? I am trying to avoid a trip into NYC to spend the day on line to get it done in there. Thanks for the info in advance!!

I've never tried it, but was wondering if a color copy of your passport would work. I think the only thing the passport is for is to verify that you are the same person in your CASS photo. And if you get a seat in the back, I'm not sure you are even required to show your passport.

My Experience

If you wish to do same day passport service at a passport office, the following allowed me to be in and out in a timely manner.

1.http://travel.state.gov/
2. Complete the DS-82.
3. Get the required letter from chief pilots office.
4. Get the required photographs.
5. Fourteen Days in advance you are able to use a phone tree to schedule and confirm you appointment. (Very Important Write down and DO NOT Loose your appointment ID number).
6. Old Passport
7. Payment Method ($127.00).

I Showed up a few minutes early 9:00 AM, Presented The ID number Ds-82, Letter and Photos to a widow in the lobby. After she verified that I had the required items, she sent me to an upper floor and another number that they would call when they were ready to process my application. As soon as I got off the elevator they were calling my number.

I went to the window she collected my items and my money, gave me another slip of paper with another ID number on it and said my new passport would be ready at noon. The above took a total of 12 minutes.

Returned at 11:50 collected my new passport and back out the door at 12:05. Note you now have a new passport number getting your company a copy of it in a timely manner is important.

If you have your stuff in order and make an appointment very painless. If you do not make an appointment, or forget something the day will be a wash.

I just went through this. If you want it turned around that fast you'll have to go to a regional passport office in person to do it. They'll get your new one back to you in just a few hours. Go to the State Dept. website for details. You'll need an appointment so it's not an all day wait. Plan 3 to 4 hours. The NY office did mine in just over 2 hrs and I came in at the end of the day. It's only a block from a subway stop so it's very easy to get to.

Edit: Never mind. Just read Smoking Man's post.

You can't jumpseat using CASS with an expired passport.

Looks like you gotta wait the two weeks, or make an appointment at one of the passport offices.

Pilotgolfer touched on this...the passport gets you in the offline jumpseat, not having a passport will not prevent you from sitting in the back.

It took me an hour and a half to get a new Passport in Denver.
-get the CP letter
-make an appointment (earlier the better) and you are on your way.

NO PASSPORT REQUIRED, but not expired

You do not and should not need your passport to jumpseat, but you must have a current passport on file. Also, you can non cass j/s with an expired passport. Gate agent friend says this change about 2 months ago. Good luck. I Paid for the expidited passport at post office about 50 bucks but got it back in less than a week from a Minnesota post office
