Regionals Stink

Why does anyone want to fly for a regional in this day and age? They treat you like crap and pay you like a busboy. Get used to eating ALOT of ramen noodles on you salaries. Stay flying traffic watch or being a flight instructor. At least you're home with the family every night.

The thing is they have turbine airplanes and you don't get hired for a better job without some turbine experience. They know this and so do we.

If you want turbine experience, be a freight dog and fly a Caravan by yourself at night in the ice. Get some "real world" experience before hanging on to the coat tails of a captain at a regional where all you're good at is squalking and talking. Make some descisions for yourself and earn you're own money.

I'm a captain now for a regional flying a CRJ. I'm sick and tired of all the "broads " and young boys who had daddy pay for their hours and aren't worth a $hit flying. They need to pay their dues and get some "real experience" before they fly with me. It is so disgusting what they're (the regionals) putting through nowadays.

I agree flying a Caravan is good experience. A good amount of us at the "Regional" level flew freight, in ice, at night. I did not fly the Caravan, but I did freight in twin Cessnas out of Denver and that too was some good flying experience. However, SWA, JB, and AirTran are not hiring a ton of Caravan pilots right now. Not to say it has not happened. Of the few National or Major carriers that are hiring, some do prefer or require some 121 PIC multi turbine time in A/C that are over 20,000#.

I got the message Desiday. True, I miss being home everynight, but I had to many close calls flying the MU to warrent me staying in it. I figuared my day was up and needed to move on to bigger things.

As far as FO's hanging on coat tails, I don't see the point in that remark. Sure, maybe guys and gals went about it diffrent ways to sit next to me, but I don't hold that against them in anyway or think less of them in that regard. I flew freight, fine. He flew Cessna's to build time. Fine. Let's have some fun and make it an enjoyable three day. As long as they know how to fly the plane and do it safely, then rock on and move on. I know they can do the job just as competent as I can or they wouldn't be there. Having a ego in a cockpit is the last thing anyone needs to enjoy this lustrius career we both have decided to move on to. Don't fault the guy cause they went about it differently.

If they ask me something that requires me to pull back into my friehgt experince to answer, then I'll be happy to give my compadre the experince I learned or fake the answer. LOL

I flew freight in Barons and Senecas. Towed banners in crappy 150s. Even did city tours in rickety 172s. But I never questioned another pilot simply for his experience, or lack thereof.

In my opinion, this is what makes flying a drag now: it's pilot against pilot. For every pilot, there is another road to the left seat. No need to bust someone's chops because they didn't do it the way you did. Guess this is what whipsawing is doing to us. We're cannibalizing ourselves, and we don't even realize it.

a payscale that eventually gets to $100/hr.
I guess you think that isn't enough for flying
a rj. Everyone's FO pay sucks the first year
or two. All of corpex's payscale sucks, so

Run a search on this guys previous post. A little more than two months ago he was flying Cessna 172's looking for a regional job.

To top it off he's hoping ALG gets some RJs he can go fly with his real experience.

What a bitter, whiny person you are. Thats it, be jealous of all the "broads and young boys" out there who made something of themselves. Curious what you consider "real experience", does dealing with students trying to kill you or dodging Level 5s count? Bet you're an awesome CRJ captain.... on MSFS 2004.

I'm getting ready to go take my B727 systems final...I don't think my perfect sim check was good enough for "daddy" to keep funding this waste of money called a college education. Have fun in your 172!

4) ALPA, like it or not, really does want to
protect the mainline payscales, and keep
the "regional" payscales destictly lower.
After all, they did sign off on the mesa
contract that I read so much about!

5) You are helping your "mainline" cover
work that belongs to "mainline" pilots,
effectively stealing their jobs. Now you
want their payscale too. Have you no
shame?

I tallied my pay to 12/15. Not counting the 3500.00 in perdiem, I grossed 56K. Not great for a 3 1/2 year Capt, but, given the conditions, not too bad. I think a 5 year RJ Capt is worth 85 per hour, IMHO. I hope we will, one day, be appreciated and get those rates- Wil

That's great! One problem with incomes
is that expenditures always grow to
meet/exceed them...the American Dream!
I wish that I could get brand X 5th year
mainline CA pay for a year, live at my
current expenditure level, then walk up
and plop down the lump sum for a
house and a new car for my wife! (I don't
want anything too nice to leave in the
airport parking lot for myself). Can you
believe those people that can afford a
MBenz and are so cheap they park
outside at the airport?

For the first time since I quit flying in
The Greatland (1999) I am going to
break $30 K. That's as a 4th year CA
at Corpex...pathetic, I know.
I can't remember if it is 3rd or 4th yr
that the fo jet pay goes past me at
mesa...it seemed like I was making
a good choice at the time. I gotta
get a new crystal ball!!!

Soooo, why do we fly at "regionals"?
Well, it got me out of hauling trash
for even less money in an Aztruck that
I had dual gen failures in twice...yes,
lost both of them on two seperate
occasions. IFR. I can't imagine sitting
next to someone in a 150 and trying to
keep them from killing me!

Not all regionals are that bad.

I was hired at ACA and made a miserbale $22,000 my first year (1999.) BTW, i did not PFT.

I upgraded to DoJet Captain after 14 months. Since then I've made no less than $60,000 - $75,000/yr. I am currently a CRJ CA making approx $80,000 (not incl per diem.)

In a year or so I should be an Airbus FO making the same amount.

1) I understand that a jungle jet doesn't generate the revenue of 737, but a 737 doesn't generate the revenue of a 777 either but they are on the same sliding scale we however are way off that scale.

2) You're right as I said in my last post. The "regionals" continue to grow while the mainline shrinks because of the whored out labor costs. The 70 and 90 seat market will be the next boom at the regional level while the mainlines will lose more and more good paying jobs.

3) You sound like the CEO of Express Jet at the IPO meeting a few years back when he was being bombarded with questions about the implications of it. "If you don't like it leave, I'll help you pack your **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**." "I didn't tell you guys to become pilots. That is the chance you took. You could have become doctor's or lawyers if you wanted to make more money." Well no **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** Sherlock just because I chose a career that I enjoy doesn't mean that I should give up my right to live a good life outside of work for myself and my family. Were pilots not truck drivers for God's sake.

4) I agree with you on this one and it makes no sense as mainline carriers leverage for pay increases get less and less as regional power continues to grow.
