regional washout

A friend of mine just washed out of sim training at a regional. He flew for an airline before, and made it through groundschool and an oral OK. He did not fail a checkride, just not ready to take one when the time came. Can he still apply to other airlines? What will come up on the background check? If contacted, what will/can this airline say to a prospective employer. Please help...no flames.

He is free to apply and interview with any and all other regionals, one failure shouldn't end the chances for a successful pilot career if he can learn from this mistake(s) and make the correct and appropriate changes that will be needed to ensure success the next time around. As long as he can justify this failure to the interview board, fess up to it, and admit he has become better from it then he should be fine.


Before he does anything else though he really needs to work on the problem areas so he doesn't fail again... Two busts will probably be somewhat hard to overcome, so failure cannot be an option on attempt 2.

Sure he can continue to apply. Even if he busted the checkride, that isn't the end of the world. But, when applying, or interviewing, he needs to tell the truth about the experience. I guarantee that if he covers it up and the new employer finds out, he will be out of a job, and at that point quite possibly out of the running. I know several guys who busted checkrides and went on to be hired by majors. But, they were up front about what happened.

Your friend might have to take a Pilot Records Improvement Act (PRIA) hit for his washout. Your friend's rights under the Act are at this link. Of particular interest to your friend might be provisions in which he can correct inaccuracies in his records which could affect a hiring decision:

7. Do pilots have the right to correct any inaccuracies in their records before the hiring air carrier makes the final hiring decision?

YES, the law specifically requires air carriers to "provide the individual with a reasonable opportunity to submit written comments to correct any inaccuracies contained in the records" (see 49 U.S.C. § 44703(h)(9). The reasonable opportunity to correct inaccuracies, by law, must be provided "before making a final hiring decision with respect to the individual." It is important to note that this provision applies to air carriers who maintains records, or requests and receives records. (see 49 U.S.C. § 44703(h)(9)).

8. Do pilots have the right to review their records?

Yes, within 30 days of the request unless there are other provisions of law or agreement to the contrary. Upon written request from a pilot who is or has been employed by such air carrier:

(1) The air carrier shall make available to the pilot for review, any and all employment records referred to in 49 U.S.C. § 44703(h)(1)(B)(i) or (ii) pertaining to the employment of the pilot; and

(2) The air carrier shall provide a copy of the aforementioned records to the pilot within a reasonable time, but not later than 30 days after the date of the request from the pilot. (see 49 U.S.C. § 44703(h)(10))
