Writing a College Recommendation

Has anyone here written a college recommendation for someone? I was asked by a HS junior who works at my local airport to write him a recommendation for the university I went to. He wants to study engineering and I’ve known him well enough to recommend him (I would do it even if he didn’t ask).
Should I treat it like the recommendations that I’ve written for others in ref to employment? What is a good way to start? I was thinking with starting off by saying : “I am a 1997 graduate of XXX University and would like to recommend Joe Blow as an applicant to the university” or something along this line.
I would then follow up with 2 or 3 sentences on each of these topic pertaining to the student:
1. How I know him
2. His desire to obtain an engineering degree
3. His outstanding academic performance
4. Athletic accomplishments
5. Aviation Accomplishments - hitting upon responsibility with this topic, my college loves that responsible young adult stuff
6. His work ethic
Any help, thanks in advance

Sounds like you have a handle on it. You could also call the admissions office and ask a counselor what they look for.

Learlove,

Along the way I’ve written several letters of recommendation for people. I always try to add a personal touch to the letter (a story about the person or something like that) in hopes that whoever is reading it will see the sincerity in what I have said. And on certain occasions I get right to the point;

Dear Sir/Madam,

It is without hesitation that recommend Mr. *** for admission to NC State University. I cannot think of a better qualified, more well-rounded young man who deserves an opportunity at your educational institution.

Blah Blah Blah…
