Here is my problem with the ASA MEC....

I'm in the overflow lounge yesterday, and I overhear an ALPA rep on the phone. He's talking about how Scott H has his "head stuck up his a$$" over the email he sent out yesterday about medical certificates. He continues his 3rd grade rant for 10 minutes, then I find out he's at the airport for ASAP questions.

When your at the airport with your ALPA shirt on, your on official business, and I, along with the other "professional" pilots would appreciate it if you would "act" professional, and please try not to act like an idiot while your representing me.

And one more thing...why did ALPA send out the rant a few weeks ago about Scott talking with pilots about furloughs and displacements. We are all big boys, and can handle the truth. I'd rather management speak freely and openly about whats on their mind, than get the diluted kool-aid version. I guess ALPA wants us all to walk around ignorant and oblivious to reality until the company has to send out the 2 week furlough letter....Then we can all sit around and wonder when it started to turn sour.

Well as of tonight, 38 Captains are going to be FO's again, and not a word from the union. Would the real man of genius please stand up?

Who was the rep?

And what did you want the union to say? What the company is doing is legal per the contract. Nobody's getting furloughed, although I feel for the guys that are getting bumped back. It sucks, and hopefully they'll get their seat back next spring when the lines pick up again. But, the union doesn't make hiring decisions so I'm curious what you want them to do?

I too want more professionalism out of our MEC. I don't care for the hate filled emails and certainly would have been angry with the rant mentioned.

I will be making a trip back to the right seat on Sept 1st.

Sorry to hear that man, but your right. Our MEC got a contract the pilot group is happy (for the most part) and they should have very little to carry on about.

I for one have a lot of respect for SH.

Hope to see you back in the left seat soon bro.

Thanks. Yeah I have respect for him too, but I am afraid we are in the minority. He may not always be correct, but I think he is a good guy.

No you're in the "silent majority"....the loudmouth ALPA chest thumper that is the subject of this thread is in the vocal minority.....The "silent majority" needs to speak up however.....Don't be afraid of the loudmouth ALPA reps....They are harmless.....All bark and no bite.....

If management wanted to get real ugly....they could start furloughing like most carriers....Skywest likes to avoid that.....

BT, do tell what rep was being unprofessional?

Don't be afraid to speak up. Remmber they work for us.

Why don't we get rid of ALPA, and get an in-house union? I would much rather pay my dues to people I know, and get better representation in the process. The issue with the 401-K was the last straw for me.

Well the union was getting in Scott's face not to talk about any doom and gloom. Well for 38 Captains, the doom and gloom has arrived, in the form of a 40% pay cut. So, since the union was getting all hot and bothered a few weeks ago, I think its time they share what they know...if anything....If they don't know anything; say so. But come on 1-800-MEC-ATIS, another waste of our dues money, hasn't been updated since April, and the message before that was in January! Get on the phone, and say we have no further information at this time. Or get on the phone and say the Company has agreed to park 5 200's. Or whatever they know.

My point is, they were quick to stop Scott talking about furloughs and displacements. Well now the displacements are here, and ALPA asked mgmt to keep quiet a few weeks ago....so I expect to here from my representation.....What up?

And not on Monday...like last night would have been great; but nada.

Don't know. Blue button down ALPA shirt, glasses. Never seen him before. We were in the small computer area in the overflow lounge. There were a few people in there with us. Like I said, when you put on the shirt, show up at the airport, and conduct official business, don't act like a moron. People are watching and listening.

Let's see....what are you doing on this board that is any different than what you claim this mystery person did? You make an allegation and don't even know who your ALPA rep is? Maybe you should have introduced yourself and stated your concerns, if this incident really happened.

I'm raising the flag on this one!

Yeah, let's put our trust in one of the ring leaders of the RJDC--a known ALPA hater and self-proclaimed rebel with a lost cause! Your law suit cost me alot more than the $7 a month that I may be paying in dues on my 401-K contributions. Sorry, you can't really be called a member of the silent majority or for that matter the silent minority.

You make me proud to be an ALPA Cheerleader! At least each one of them shows up for more than one meeting in 2 years, in a position for which they were elected. Rah, Rah, Ray!

He can't tell you because not only is he NOT a real man of genius, he does not know who is reps are? Is he really plugged in?

Raise the Flag--his story is probably just that--a story!

I'm not an ALPA cheerleader by ANY stretch of the imagination, but I gotta disagree with you on this one. If he was on the telephone having a private conversation with someone else, and not speaking directly to you, or a group of other pilots while serving in the capacity of an ALPA rep, it really wasn't any of your business what he was saying on the phone. (If you happen to be in the lounge while I'm on the phone having a conversation with my wife, does that give you the right to disagree with what we decide to have for dinner? It's the same concept....)
Also: I happen to respect SH, and certainly don't think that he is an idiot. That being said, his email telling us that we still have to continue to get a new 1st class medical every six months was bogus. I dunno if it qualifies as 'having his head up his a$$', but it's not acceptable to make pilots continue to have to spend excess money on medicals that aren't required by the FAA. In fact, it's specifically against what had been agreed to in the contract. Just for reference, a new 1st class medical every six months would probably take more out of your bank account than the new exposure to 401k contributions will.

With all due respect, did you actually ask him any questions about the ASAP program? I don't ask the rampers about the price of jet fuel, I don't ask the flight attendant how to run the torque and condition levers on my beloved assigned aircraftt, and I certainly don't ask the blue juice guy about the forecasted weather for my flight. Why would I hold the safety chairman's opinion as official ALPA doctrine on what boils down to a contractual issue?

And one more thing...why did ALPA send out the rant a few weeks ago about Scott talking with pilots about furloughs and displacements. We are all big boys, and can handle the truth. I'd rather management speak freely and openly about whats on their mind, than get the diluted kool-aid version. I guess ALPA wants us all to walk around ignorant and oblivious to reality until the company has to send out the 2 week furlough letter....Then we can all sit around and wonder when it started to turn sour.

I would rather have management, of both ALPA and the airline, speak openly about the conditions of the market and the company. This way, I can determine what exactly I think the actual truth is. I don't know Scott, but I kinda suspect that there's no one in ALPA who could make him give the diluted kool-aid version of the topic of the day.
However, for reference, it probably should be pointed out to ALPA that putting out any information other than the exact facts often leads to miscommunications and misunderstandings that are counter productive. I vividly remeber an expectation of 900s coming to ASA well before the last contract was settled. I also remember said aircraft being awarded to SKYW during 'negotiations', and ALPA dropping the ball on explaining the truth on that situation.

I'm a 'big boy', and I don't need a blast mail from ALPA, or the airline, telling/sugarcoating/kool-aiding me about negative events. The writing was and is on the wall: There are changes coming to the pilot group at ASA. I hope that the worst case has happened, in that no one loses a job, the guys/gals displaced back to the right seat are back in the left seat soon, and that I'm only 38 spots further away from an upgrade. However, frankly, I'm prepared for, and expecting, quite a bit worse from this situation before it gets better.

One final thing: Speetape, give it up buddy. If you are ALPA, have the cojones to say so. You would have much more credibility, both here and in person, if you would have the courage to accept the accountability accompanying your position within ALPA.

Why didn't you introduce yourself and voice your displeasure with his private phone converstation? And as you could not hear who was on the other end of his conversation, and what that person was saying, you obviously don't know what issue they were talking about do you?

Someone with glasses! Well, as I know who our ALPA reps are, that narrows it down to two, and I could tell you who it was exactly but won't. Introduce yourself next time, even if you don't have a complaint about his converstation. Our ALPA reps are volunteers, and you should appreciate their efforts to improve things here, as well as SH and BH's efforts. No one is perfect.

Are they (ALPA) perfect and do the right things all the time? No, they don't, and neither does the company. But ALPA is there for us, represent us, and attempt to do their best as volunteers. Under BH's leadership, ASA has greatly improved, and for the first time in my 18 years here, I'm proud of ASA's accomplishments, and the pilot group's as well.

Wait a minute here, if he was there for the ASAP presentation, wouldn't he be a safety committee guy? Those guys are not reps. Maybe the original poster needs to learn the difference.

I think I know who it is, and if so, he's done more work for the safety committee over his years at ASA than the original poster has ever dreamed of. Let's give him a pass on this, especially since he was on a private phone conversation in a somewhat private area (the back computer room is kinda small and not exactly out in front of everybody).

Would it not have been appropriate to do this on the ALPA Board since it is about ALPA?
