Twenty plus years ago, an application for the radiotelephone operator permit was included in my "pilot starter kit" from Cessna. I filled it out and received my FCC permit for FREE! I carried it with me until someone told that I no longer needed it for domestic flying. Somewhere along the line, I lost it. When I started applying to the airlines that required it, I wrote the FCC about a replacement for my old permit. Of course the response I got was send in a new application and $45-50 bucks. Can't remember exactly how much now. Oh well, I don't plan on losing my current one, even though no one has ever asked to see it.
