I believe that without protection the CRJ noise levels are high enough to cause damage over the long term. The high-pitched wind noise is certainly above the safe threshhold and since hearing loss is cumulative over time I would imagine that after several years in the airplane (unprotected) there would be significant damage.

Sorry my friend. The thing's just plain LOUD.
