Wow,
Relax guys. There are plenty of places you can go in the US where Americans bad mouth Brits. Seems Flight Info is stooping to the PPrune level. As a Limey, enjoying the US lifestyle, I would point out that the average Brit is wholeheartedly behind your President. I can assure you all that if it comes to a scrap in Iraq we will be right there with you, just like you were for us. We will always be grateful to you guys helping out during WW1 and 2. If you've ever been to the UK and walked into a pub, and had to buy your own beer maybe you weren't talking loudly enough for your accent to be heard!
I have worked with the US military and have the utmost respect for them. I know they feel the same way. Our militaries really do have a special relationship.
As was stated before, there are idiots in every nation. It would appear that the UK ones have discovered PPrune.
As for throwing out green carders! Well, my wife and kids are US citizens. My country provided them with security, healthcare, education and well being for the last 10 years. It just didn't have airlines that paid so well. And it rained too much. Had great beer though. Overall, would prefer to stay here. The beer is available here, thank God.
We came to the good old USA to make a go of it in the land of the free and the brave. Just like virtually every one of your ancestors did. Personally? Americans are the friendliest people on earth. I love it here, I love them. They seem to like me too! (hope they aren't just pretending) Feel the warmth?
Don't start getting xenophobic - just take PPrune w/a pinch of salt. Get on there and give as good as you get. Most of the comments are based on that speciality skill of all Brits - sarcasm!
Have a goodday, y'all:) (with all sincerity)

Enigma,

Boy, you sure surprised me with your pprune post (the long one). Granted you don't see any "across the pond bashing" on this board, but that's because it has almost zero non-American posters and seldom contains international or even domestic political viewpoints. The "clientele" on flightinfo is also very different from pprune. Most of the posters on this bbs are relatively new to aviation and almost exclusively American, while the general pprune set is mostly airline pilots from all over the world. It is an international aviation forum.

With respect to aviation, we Americans seem to think that US companies are the only ones out there and generally know little if anything about foreign carriers. Just as we don't care what European, Asian, Latin American carrier is hiring or not (like you point out) why would you expect them to care if Comair is interviewing, Spirit is negotiating or USAir is furloughing? I think you're being unfair with that view.

I sure don't want to pick a fight with you, but when you say things like " We should leave them alone, and we should lock down our borders to anyone" and the rest of the stuff in that paragraph, I have to tell you that this American thinks that your isolationist views are out of touch with reality and not in the best interests of our country.

As a matter of fact, it is not only as hard for a non-citizen to get a job here as it is for Americans to get jobs in other countries, in most cases it is much harder. The fact that we have so many non-citizens working here illegally is only because WE are willing to exploit them and violate our own laws to do it.

Another fallacy in your thinking is the idea that people come here from other countries to "take advantage of our freedoms". In most cases they do not. People come here to make money. Most of them don't give a damx about our "freedoms" and don't have a clue as to what they are. When it comes to western Europeans, they have no need to come here for our "freedoms" for most of the western Europeans enjoy the very same freedoms, if not more.

Whether we like it or not, we are but a small percentage of the world's population. If we help to fight what you call the world's battles, we do so because it is in our own interest, not because we are "nice guys". That "nice guy" idea is an urban myth. Yes there was a time when we were self-sufficient but if you really want to take us back to that time, we'll all be living as we did in the 19th century. Are you sure that's what you want?

We consume far more of everything than everyone else in the world combined. We also produce much more of many things than we are able to consume ourselves. If you want to shift us back from a high-tech society in need of international markets for our products to an agrarian economy we could probably be self-sufficient and isolated again. Understand however, what you're asking for. If we do that, we will also cease to be the "super power" that we are today and it will no longer be possible for us to impose our will on others wherever in the world we choose to do so.

How quickly they forget.

Forget what? If you think Europeans have forgotten what we did in Europe during WWII and how it liberated them from German occupation and prevented their enslavement by the Soviet Union you are very, very wrong. They remember and most are grateful. That however, does not mean that they have to kiss our a$$es every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Are you willing to kiss the backside of the French because you remember that we could not have won our war of independence from the British without their help? Are you willing to do it again because we would have been defeated in the War of 1812 had it not been for their assistance, again? Somehow, I think you may have forgotten too?

Let "us" not forget that the Marshall plan was not a "gift". Most of it was money we loaned and most of it has been repaid, with the notable exception of Great Britain. Let us also not forget that we, once more, did it (both in Europe and Japan) because it was in the interest of the United States to do so. We did NOT do it due to generosity and anyone who believes we did just hasn't studied or read very much.

Yes, the American people are by nature generous and give much to those in need both at home and abroad. That is laudable. However, the American Government is not generous at all. It truly "gives" very little. It uses is money to buy its way and promote the political and economic interests of the United States. As an American, I'm not really complaining about that, but please don't call it generosity or a desire to help others. It is anything but. You should also recognize that the recipients are not unaware of our motives.

We also did not fight the war in Europe because we wanted to be nice to the Europeans. We did it because if we had not, your language would now be German or Russian instead of English. We fought the war with Japan in order to protect the economic interests of the United States in Asia, prevent the expansion of the Japanese empire and extend our own power in that region of the world.

Like every super power that has preceded us in the world, the United States has built an empire. The only real difference between what other imperial powers have done and our methodology is that they expanded their empires by taking and holding the lands of others. We expand our empire with economic power and the "threat" of military force. There really isn't much difference in the final analysis. All imperial powers are resented by those they control and dominate.

Calling the UN a socialist organization and advocating that we withdraw is really specious. If that is indicative of the views of Texans, then I hope that your fellow Texan will not gain another term in the White House. Remember too that the concept of a "world government" is not embraced by any nation. Other peoples guard their national identity and sovereignty as jealously as we do ours. That concept is academian and resides mostly in Universities, many of which are in New England and California not Europe.

I have to agree with you when you say you are no student of history. I sincerely hope that you will have an opportunity to expand your thinking and recognize that there are other people in the world and it is far from essential that they think or act like Americans in order to be good people. If we expect our views to be heard and respected, we must listen to and respect the views of others. The fact that today we have more money and bigger guns, is of little true value. All of the world's "super powers" had more money and bigger guns in there hey day. None of them respected the views of others. Where are they now?

Is that the future you really want for the United States of America? I certainly hope not. I would like this Nation to be around for my great, great, great grandchildren to inherit. Adoption of your isolationist policy and the lack of tolerance for the ways and views of non-Americans will guarantee that it isn't.

Sorry for the sermon, but what you said really bothered me. It has nothing to do with pprune.

The Brits are good people and candidly, have a better talent for the use of our common language which often seems to confuse us yanks.

The French are good people too. Both we and the Brits would understand that if we could only speak French.

As for the rest of the folks over there, until recently, isn't that were most of our ancestors came from? Why can't we just get along?

First I am a Native born US citizen. I think pegasus is right that not all Brits are against us or calling Bush a cowboy. I think what has happened in the UK is the no life- no brains -no common sense- so perspective on real life- city dwelling- public transportation using- never fired a gun- animal rights- but eats meat-pro abortion- God hating - thinks its OK to be a fag- gun outlawing- trying to outlaw fox hunting-can't possibly relate to the freedons of someone that is a aircraft owner and pilot- LIBERALS have taken control of the political scene and are trying to ram their version of sociialism down the throats of the level headed Brits in the countryside. They hate us for being right- strong- free, etc. This is the same bunch that were Tories ( in the colonies )in 1776, tried to appease Hitler just before WW2, thought Reagan was nuts for call the Soviet Union the Evil empire, and now are afraid to do what is needed with Iraq. While I am ranting I'll give my thoughts on the mid-east oil fields. Seize Iraq's and Saudi's fields (Saudi nationalized the oil fields in 1954- Take them back) overthrow the Saudi kingdom at set up free democratic elections in these countries and use the oil field revenures to do a Marshall plan type rebuild. The common Iraq and Saudi citizen will love us because the will have it so much better. Also we can use the oil field revenues to pay for the last gulf war and this one and the Bosnia "police action". Then we can reduce US taxpayers taxes through the oil field revenues. And,Oh yeah blow their shiney black rock ( a meteorite) that they worship in mecca into a million pieces- so they can worship the real God.

PPRuNe

Hi All,

First of all, PPRuNe is based in Australia. Second, excelent posts by Aerosmith and Pegasus. Having had the privilige of living in Europe four years has broadened my understanding and appreciation of their culture. Additionally, I was always made to feel welcome every place I went...and was always invited back! I cruise PPuNe regularly and enjoy it very much. As Huck said, there are dickheads on every continent, so I don't take the Yankee bashing too seriously. Take care.

310,

I'm very happy we have LIBERALS up in Washington protecting us from morons like you. Regarding foxhunting in UK, it was today reported by ABC, CBS, and CNN (all liberal), that over 70% of the britts support a ban. Does majority have any meaning to you?

Commute to work day, not much time.

That's why I call myself enigma.

We can't get along because of human nature, and the fact is that the world is governed by the agressive use of force.

BTW, I didn't mean to bash anyone, and I don't think I did so. I did mean to convey that we could manage to survive just fine as an isolated country. Maybe Exxon/Mobil, Ford, GE, GM, etc wouldn't make as much money, but we could manage just fine.

Liberals by there very nature cannot and will not protect anyone. They work tirelessly to disarm all but the elite in this country, those who can afford to hire private bonded armed guards or build an estate with walls, gates and half a million dollar security systems.

For people like you and I they want us subservient to the state.

Liberals hate freedom, the very thought that you or I can make our own decisions and live our own lives without government intervention goes completely against the grain of every principal they hold dear. Liberals are not lovers of freedom. Liberals believe that the average person is simply too ignorant to be free. They believe that the average person can only live a fulfilling life with the help and guidance of those who are more qualified, capable and intelligent – and that, of course, would be the leftist intelligentsia.

Liberals hate Christianity; Christianity is a hindrance to liberal ideas of progressive social relations. It must be removed. This is a cardinal tenet of liberalism today, and it is clear why there is no desire among the left to promote the Christian faith, why they defend abortion, homosexuality, pre and extramarital sex, and almost every other vile crudity that pervades our country: men must be "free," and Christianity is the greatest obstacle to that freedom and does all sorts of evil to prevent people from being "free" In the liberal mind, "freedom" equals "progress," so, Christianity must be eliminated, or at least relegated to a noninfluential role in society's affairs.

Liberals hate guns, Liberals made that association long ago. They know that people cannot fight for or preserve freedom unless they have the means to do so – and that means guns.

Liberals hate wealth, they say, on grounds of economic injustice—as though prosperity were a pizza, and if I have too many slices, you’re left with nothing but a Domino’s box to feed your family. Liberals actually hate wealth because they hate all success; wealth is, for most people, the only honest and likely path to liberty. But liberals aren’t very interested in such real and material freedoms. They have a more innocent—not to say toddler-like—idea of freedom. Liberals want the freedom to put anything into their mouths, to say bad words and to expose their private parts in art museums.

Along those same lines, liberals hate capitalism in general.
Another item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability. Liberals have invented whole college majors—psychology, sociology, and women’s studies—to prove that nothing is anybody’s fault. No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you’d have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment.

Liberals love government. They love coercive government. If there were a revolutionary war today, it would not be the liberals waiting to see the whites of their eyes.

Liberals love politically correct ideas, speech and of course thoughts. They believe in revisionist history and forgetting the past. They love entitlement, wealth redistribution and eliminating the upper class.

To say liberals are there to protect us is akin to saying al Qaeda is there to educate us. While it is possible it is very very highly impracticable.

The liberals we have here in the USA are kittens compared to the liberals, socialist the Europeans have to contend with. Just to give you an example the Labour Party in Britain, one of their founding members was a co-author of the communist manifesto; this is the party in power currently. Countries like France are a lost cause, they would rather lock up people who try to defend themselves than the criminal, so to Britain.

Germany just reelected a Socialist government and would rather surrender to the terrorist and await a nuclear bomb blast, chemical attack or the unleashing of a biological entity upon the world than to act now.

Liberals are not our friends; they may be yours but… that surly says a lot about you. I live in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia; living-breathing proof of exactly what the infancy of a liberal/socialist utopia would look like.

>>>>>>First of all, PPRuNe is based in Australia.

PPRuNe is very much British. I used to be a avid PPRuNer, years ago, when it was a smaller board. I've corresponded with Danny Fyne, the PPRuNe founder and I can assure you that he's British. Now, I haven't logged onto PPRuNe for a few years. Danny might have changed the board to an Australian server (possibly to avoid the numerous lawsuit threats he receieved from people who didn't like someone's opinion) but the board originated in Britian.

Note there *are* a lot of Australian contributors. you guys think the brits are into US bashing, you should see what thney have to say about the Ozzies.

I read that board once and a while and watch BBC news all the time. There is some benefit to seeing other opinions and how other countries view the U.S., it doesn't mean I agree with alot of what is said. One major thing I like about the Europeans is that they have a much broader "international viewpoint", you can tell this just by looking at their news versus our "80 seconds" around the world news blurbs.

And to you British guys. Britain and its people are great. I haven't seen any anti-American attitudes when visiting, just the opposite actually. The French, ahh the French, well I won't say anything on that...

Hey Surplus

You're guilty of reading way too much into my post. I've got a reserve day tommorrow, I'll respond then.

regards,
8N

BTW, I'll match my knowledge of history with any sample of people you can put together. Just because I didn't have time to address the war for independence from King George, doesn't mean that I am unaware of the role played by the French.

Edit: PS. I just went back and reread my "long" post. I think that maybe you were still riled up over someone elses post when you responded to me. When read carefully, I'm only advocating that the US of A stay out of other country's business. I could have worded some of the post a little better(especially the part about kicking out the immigrants), I'll try and rewrite it for clarity.

A lot of forums originating in the US has had a tendency of very agressive replys.
Lets keep the ditchdigging and fundamentalist views out of this otherwise excellent discussion.

To quote ol' Maggie Thather (from memory):

In international politics you have no friends, you just take advantage of people with common interests!

Period!

It is very naive to think that isolationism will cure illnesses of this country. Its like yelling to the driver:
-Stop the world, I want to get off.

Anyway, as the pilot will tell his date after 5 hours: Enough about me, lets talk about airplanes!

That's a typical liberal response. Differ if you want, but I will not be dismissed. If you don't like LA's religious views (fudementalist), then post a response, please don't just attempt to dismiss them. It shows just how little respect "tolerant" people have for others views.

Who said anything about the "illnesses of this country? I only said that the US of A should give the rest of the world what it wants and stay out of their business.
