Is there an FAR or AC that explains what the proper procedure is for id'ing yourself?

For example. Cessna 172 RG has a tailnumber of N6277R.

Upon initial callup to ground at a controlled airport one would say "Kalamazoo ground, Skyhawk 6277R with ZULU taxi to activate vfr northbound."

After that, when talking to tower, what is the procdure or rule for your callsign? Can you at that point call youself "77R?" Or do you need to initiall identify yourself as 77R on your initial callup?

Radio procedure

Tower would be a new facility as opposed to ground. Tower may be talking to another 77 Romeo. Therefore, you should use your full call sign, i.e. Skyhawk 6277R, when making your initial callup to Tower.

Don't have an AIM handy to see if the procedure is still valid. But, the AIM used to say that you should use your full id until the ground facility abbreviates it. In other words, use Skyhawk 6277R until ground refers to you as just Skyhawk 77R. When you change to tower, call yourself Skyhawk 6277R again.

Being a commercial pilot / instrument rated, you'd think I know this. It's funny how things slip the mind sometimes. No one ever mentioned that I was doing it wrong (my callup's) but I am always looking on improving minor flaws in my flight training =)

according to the ATC handbook 7110.65 proper phraseology with ATC would be full callsing on intial contact.

Kalamazoo ground, skyhawk 3242 November ready to taxi.

after initial contact you can call yourself skyhawk 42 november.
----type and last 3 digits of your tail number.....

so you call tower and your in the air.....contact departure...
initial contact
"Kalamazoo departure, skyhawk 3242 November out of 1.5 fo 3 thousand."
"skyhawk 3242 November, kalamazoo departure radar contact, proceed on course"
"on course for skyhawk 42 november.."

everytime you are handed off to another controller whether it be multiple approach controllers or from approach to tower or to center its full call sign. once youve established comms with a particular controller and youve shaken hands its callsign and last 3 digits...

just like them, everytime you call a facilty on the radio they will competley i.d. themselves...after that....they just talk

Of course if you hear:

"skyhawk 3242 November, kalamazoo departure radar contact, proceed on course, be advised there is a 7642November on the frequency"

then you are expected to clarify every call you make to that facility.

ATC are really nice folks!
 
And when you check in with succeeding freq.s, don't say "with you...." or "checking in...". Just the fact that you're talking on their freq. makes it pretty obvious that you're "with them". Sorry, one of my pet peeves.
 
Initial callups

Thanks, Hyper. That's one of mine, too. You say more with less. "Denver Approach, Skyhawk 6277R at (altitude)." Reply: "Skyhawk 6277R, Denver Approach, roger." Transaction completed.
