Sorry if this sounds like it's coming from my brother's friend's sister's ex-boyfriend, but I'm just trying to get some good info for some of my other buddy's concerning SWA hiring and timing..

My wife's friend's husband (see what I mean) told my wife that he was getting an interview with SWA....in about 6 months!!

Oh, and by the way, he can't get out of the military for about 2 years...does this sound plausible, or is that just wife chit-chat....

Thanks again...and realize the only reason I'm asking is that I have a few other friends who are interested in SWA and I just want to make sure they get good timeline info.....

Sounds like chit-chat and nothing more. When someone gets an invite for an interview they know the exact date they will be going. The People Dept. does NOT call you and say, "Hey, we want to interview you, so you should get something within six months or so. Bye." Instead (if history provides any insight) they'll send a letter of invite with instructions to call. You call and they set up a date on the spot. Then you know exactly when you are going to interview. Unless this person can specify a date, I would doubt the veracity of the claim. I would politely smile and say, "That's great. Good for him."

I'd also guess that SWA is hiring for near future positions. If your "bud" can't get out for 2 years, then he likely won't see an interview right now. I don't think SWA likes having people in the pool for 2 years anymore than the poolies like shrivelling up for that long. But then that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

RightBettor,

Just wondering, does the PD also follow up this letter with an eventual phone call? I'm just curious as to whether a letter has ever been lost in the mail and the recipient never knew that they were invited to an interview! Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I am scared by the thought of hinging my career on the US Postal Service.

The way it worked for me...LL called me to invite me to the interview and set up the date (about a month later). I received the package the next week formally inviting me (plus all the app stuff to fill out). This was all 2 years ago...seems like so long!

Good luck,
shootr

BeechSlapped,

Ultimately, we all rely on imperfect methods by which to be contacted for the interview. While the USPS may be not be 100% reliable when it comes to delivering mail, it seems that the failure rate is minimal. Realistically, how often to letters end up in the Dead Letter Office? As long as your current address is accurate and on file, I wouldn't loose any sleep over whether or not your letter will arrive in a timely manner.

That being said, phone calls are not 100% reliable either. Voice mails get missed or dropped (someone called my cellphone the other day and swore they had left a message... well it never showed up), people forget to give you phone messages (does your 6 year-old sometimes answer your phone and forget to pass along the info?)

Bottom line: make sure they can reach you in a number of ways. 1. Current, reliable address (get a PO box for $20 that way you know your are getting your mail and not the neighborhood punk or identity thief); 2. Two phone numbers (home and mobile... not present chief pilot's office!); and 3. If the current application allows it (I'm guessing it does) an e-mail address.

Common sense stuff.

Phone calls

Phone calls have been the primary method in the past. Msgs left with a callback required to confirm you got the msg has been the method. Expect it to probably remain the same. E-mail addresses are now available on the app so there maybe a move toward using this method with a receipt on reading as a way to expedite the process but that way isn't a guarantee but it may simply be one more way to get the word out as quickly as possible...e-mail with a phone call back to confirm and/or a phone call. With the advent of the electronic app process there will be more time available for the ladies to do what they like to do, help the folks applying, i.e. chatting with them. One of the best parts of their job has to be sharing such good news with folks & hearing their reactions...brings a smile to their face I'm sure.
