How serious is it to SWA if you have to file Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 during your first year as a FO? After being unemployed for 9 months, things are pretty rough. I know the pay with SWA will be better the second year, but right now with a new baby and hospital bills, and my wife being laid off too, things are pretty grim. Do they check your credit report when your probabtionary period is up? Are they pretty understanding about the situation in the industry since 9/11? I always frowned upon people who took bankruptcy, but now I see sometimes you're left with no choice. After finally making it to SWA, I don't want to screw anything up.

Please don't file

Dude,

I understand that things are tough, and I don't know what SWA has to say about it.
But Financially Bankrupcy is a lot worse than you think, it will come back to you for many years.

There are lots of ways to consolidate loans. I would even be willing to chunk in some money to help you out. I bet you have some reletives that can help you.

But please really think about the long term effects. Search the internet for help.

Ask for help within the company

I remember when I was at U, there were folks within the company (we were told) that specialized in counseling folks in areas of need. And believe me, if U offered it, SWA will be 10 times better. Obviously, I'm still in the pool, but I'm confident the good folks at SWA will have the resources and the compassion to try and help you out.

Here's another suggestion. Have you spoken with anyone from SWAPA about your situation yet? I'd be surprised if they weren't able to help.

Good luck. We'll keep you and your family in our prayers. :)

Another suggestion

NewSWAguy,

I just noticed this was your first post. Welcome to the board here. You're going to find it a very good place for info. Lot's of great folks here.

If you have time, send Chase a PM. He's probably going to contact you anyway. He has been a great source of information on SWA for so many of us here. He works tirelessly in responding to all sorts of SWA questions and issues. Great guy!

It's been sort of quiet lately, but many of the 'ole Flightinfo alum frequent this board on a regular basis. Trust me, someone will step up to the plate to help you out.

Hang in there dude. ;)

Question

NewSWAguy,

A guy in my new hire class filed for bankruptcy (Ch7/11?) during his probationary year and he is still employed.

NewSWAguy..
I just spoke to the on duty CP and his comments are as follows..

Call them and tell them whats going on..They are willing to do anything and everything to help...

And no..A BK is NOT grounds for termination..They consider it to be a life event..In other words poop happens..

They want to help..Call them..
PM me if you need anything..

Mike

Good Luck!!!

Keep you in our prayers too. Most of us here understand your situation. Some of us have been furloughed since 2001. Especially us USAir guys. We truly know what you are going thru.

If there is any advice I can give you...feel free to PM me as well.

Hey Mike or anyone,

best guess....how many more this year? I would love to see all of us in the pool in class by years end. But I dont think that that is realistic.

Help Is Available

NewSWAguy,

Don't suffer in silence. The stress is probably affecting your home life and work and your chief pilot/assistants are there to help in confidence. Also, the good folks at SWAPA can help. You're part of the family the day you walked in to training. We can all help. Chase is a guy who can provide a lot of guidance as to who can assist you. I had the pleasure of meeting him while in training and he's a great guy. Send him a PM. I'm on my first month flying the line after training and I'm still learning, but I don't think SWA will terminate you for this, particularly in these difficult times. I can see you being terminated for WILLFUL financial irresponsibility, but not in your case. Take care and God Bless.

Check your PM, things will work out! :D

A brief but true story that occurred several months ago on a trip out of SMF. I tell this story when talking to the folks during my PAs. The gasps from folks or applause I receive at the end of it demonstrate nothing about my PA abilities but everything about what a unique story this is & how it positively reflects on our FAs, pax & pilots. It came from an FO who wrote up the female FA & the passengers for a job well done.

Once upon a time....

A male pax realized he had lost his wallet just prior to coming on board. The plane was 5 minutes from pushing. He told the FA & they together dashed out to the lounge to look for it...no go..she suggested checking security...they both ran & found the wallet there...bad news, no money or credit cards. Pax was obviously distressed & as they hustled back to the plane he told the FA this wasn't the low point of his day!! He had just been laid off & was flying back to his hometown to tell his wife. A double whammy with the lost wallet. Believe it or not by the time the plane lands there is good news to this man's story.

After getting on board & airborne the FA got on the PA & on her own explained the events that had ouccurred to this young man (without identifying him) & what type of day he was having. She merely mentioned if anyone was willing to help it would be appreciated. By the time the plane had landed a total of $440 had been collected and 3 business cards were placed in the young man's hands with job offers!

This generosity came about for 2 reasons IMHO...we have many great FAs (all employee groups actually) who do genuinely care for our pax & are willing to help folks well beyond what the FOM states is "their job". Secondly, we have super passengers who genuinely believe that SWA is a different airline & flies us above others out of a sense of loyalty which is returned to them in the form of good service, low prices & safe operations (not necessarily in that order!!). The story wouldn't have been told if an FO hadn't taken the time to write the story up. This is one of many and certainly one of the more unique letters that are published every month by headquarters illustrating what makes SWA a little different. One can usually find them in the CSA or Ops break rooms. I've never noticed themi in the pilot lounges.

I'm sure SWA resources will be found to help you out & while bankruptcy may be inevitable, it won't be something that will occur without many folks at SWA helping you through it. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for all the great advice and PM's. Once again I am truly amazed, humbled and thankful for the company I work for, and the people I get to associate with.

Before you do anything so drastic as file for bankruptcy, PLEASE...PLEASE...check into the company and union assistance funds.

Most pilots contribute to the Pilot Aid fund, which is a SWAPA sponsored fund to assist pilots in need. There are guidelines for use of these funds, so PLEASE call SWAPA and ask if your situation warrants consideration for assistance or a no interest loan.

Also, most company employees contribute to the SWA Catastrophic Assistance Fund. A board meets frequently to review applications for assistance. Again, call Benefits and find out who runs the fund and what the guidelines are for applying for aid. They have some VERY BIG bucks to assist SWA employees in time of need.

Good luck and understand that SWA and SWAPA stand ready to help employees enduring hardship.
