Question for jetBlue pilots

I am interesting in learning more about your paperless cockpit. Was specific FAA approval needed to use laptops in the cockpit, or can you use just any old laptop?

I've heard that all of your manuals are on a laptop that the company issues to each individual pilot. Is this true? How do you handle repairs, software, etc? Can the laptops be used for personal use as well? Do you do updates to your manuals by CD-ROM or by wireless?

Are your charts also on the laptop, or do you have paper charts in the cockpit?

The new ones are Compaq/HP NC6000. The IT Dept keeps up with the times and the newer classes get the latest and greatest.

How often are new laptops issued?


I'm workin on a project and trying to get comparisons.

Only as a last resort. There are guys using 5 year old laptops. The IT Dept will do everything in their power to keep you up and running without issuing a new laptop.

Every new hire gets a brand new laptop. The IT department will then maintain and repair the laptop as necessary. If the repair is beyond the ability of IT, the computer is sent out to the manufacturer for repair. In this case, a loner laptop is issued to the pilot while the repair is in progress. Total replacement of the laptop may be issued on an "as needed" basis depending on the severity of the problem. This however is fairly rare.

In addition to company manuals, the laptops are also used for OPS limits, specifically weight and balance, and performance. A runway change or intersection takeoff is only a few keystrokes away. Landing performance and runway conditions are also available with the program.

I read in another thread that the Chief of Standards is the person leading this program. Is that true? If so, can someone PM name and contact info to me? The info would be passed on to my chief pilot.

Look for by the end of next year (so I hear) to be Totally paperless. Yes, Jepps too. They are working on a mod to make the Tray table in the Bus to a touch screen LCD that will have Jepps, Wx, Electronic Logbook etc... Pretty interesting stuff.

You can't beat paper. We just got the Jepps on the flat screen and the system is full of glitches. Crossing my fingers while crossing the Atlantic... TC
