i know you need a sponsor and i had one of those but right before our little january meeting in memphis my sponsor had to back out because of the new "have to have flown with policy" here's my question...my father has been a line mechanic at fed ex out of EWR for almost 10 years now...is there any way that can help me out? i had someone tell me that that should help me get an interview even with out the sponsor. if a fed ex guy could please PM me or something and give me some advice i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

From what I understand...Recommendations from non-pilot FedEx employees are fine but carry very little, if any, weight to getting an interview. You need recommendations from active flying FedEx pilots.

I am not sure why your sponsor had to back out of a meeting with an ACP just becasue you haven't flown together. If that is required now I haven't heard about it. His recommendation is still very stong because if he has known you long enough he can attest to your character, personality and values.

Good luck.

When the ACP's have their monthly meeting to decide who to send to Jack Lewis (system Chief Pilot), they look over the "sponsor worksheet" and one of the questions is:

4. Rate the applicant’s aviation skills / professionalism / technical
performance.

Difficult to answer if you've never flown with the guy/gal, especially when all the other sponsors have flown with their applicant...

Another Question...

Does anyone know if it helps to get an interview/job if you are currently working for FedEx as you continue to fly, say as a part time package handler? I also worked there a few years ago while on furlough. I was wondering if already being in house has any advantage. Thanks...

I don't think so...don't let Sandmans comments discourage you from trying or applying. A lot of guys get interviews without flying personally with their sponsor. I can speak personally for one of my candidates.

Persistence and patience and you'll get the call.

Dugan,

I'm not trying to discourage anyone, just passing on one opinion from many on this highly political, who you know, sponsor program. With so many applicants out there and, and from my limited experience talking with other sponsors, I think it's a long shot to get an interview if it's simply a "character reference".

Don't get discouraged, I agree! By all means get the guy/gal who's sponsoring you to push for an interview. I like long shots, heck I know I was when I arrived in Memphis!

Good luck and PM me if you want any details into the "sponsor" program.....or simply what I , along with some buds, went through.....

flydog1. search for a posting from "creampie". he laid out the driver to pilot career path a month ago. good info. good luck.

I know its difficult to get a job with FedEx right now, and I understand that you can be a great pilot and not had the opportunity to prove that by flying with a current FedEx Pilot, BUT......I do think that you should have some flight experience with your sponsor.

I have known quite a few terrific guys that were marginal pilots. I have also known people that look great on paper but were not so great in person. This is not a slam on you, its just a personal observation.

Above all we are hiring for flying expertise. The best way to evaluate that is to fly with someone first hand. Of course we want loyal, honest, and fun to be around people, but that all takes a back seat if you are unable to land safely.
