I think what he's getting at is comparing CAL to other airlines, just not "legacy carriers".

Compare CAL to others that are hiring. First year sucks compared to most places; the exception being UPS, that's worse. E190 at JB isn't really that much better and Airtran is $10/hr more. Compare the next year, then the following year, then the year after. See how long it sucks compared to JB, Airtran, World, etc. The only places that would pay better long term are possibly UPS (good luck getting in there), SWA, and FedEx.

First year pay sucks, but then one doesn't spend their career on first year pay, iirc.
