Gonna get my 737 type next month and just realized my 1st class medical lapsed to a 2nd class (I'm an FO 121 so it doesn't matter there) but to take my type ride do I need to have a current 1st class?

Depends.

If you're doing it in a sim, then NO medical is required. FAR 61.23

If you're doing any part of it in an airplane, then a third class is required.
FAR 61.39

If you're planning to apply to SW, then sometime between now and next month go get a new medical before you do your type training.
