Your missing the point. RJs are loud in the cockpit, requireing David Clark type headsets, irregardless of being company provided or not. I've never ridden in a mainline cockpit which any of the pilots ever wore David Clarks.
 
Why in the F*** do you guys respond to this troll? Just place on ignore list and hope no one quotes the dill hole.
 
the original 170's that US Air got had sennheiser noise cxing headsets in them. when the aircraft were sold to republic the headsets went with the aircraft but then started to disappear. Republic replaced the missing sennheiser with the DC's you see in the pics.

The US Air 190's have the sennheiser headsets and do not disappear.

When I was at Republic from time to time my FO would pull out his/her own 800 dollar sennheiser. Funny thing it always seemed to be an FO that was hired before or during the transfer of US Air 170's to Republic. Never once do I recall a 2007 or 2008 DOH hire FO pulling out his/her own sennheiser.

Prior to owning any 170's, RAH provided DC headsets for use in the 145. The 145 is a louder cockpit, and the DC was the best overall choice for blocking out the wind noise. The 25 MidAtlantic 170's came with Seinheiser ANR headsets. These were nice and enjoyed by the pilots, but the company had to maintain the headsets. We all understand economies of scale, and it made the most sense for the company to replace those ANR's with the DC headsets that they had parts for, and that could be swapped out easily from a common parts bin. Pilots were told that the Seinhenisers would be removed and thrown out, as the company did not want to take the time to refurbish and sell the used headsets, so some pilots took them. And it was not just FO's, but also quite a few J4J captains as well. Half of the headsets ended up in pilot chart cases, the other half ended up on E-bay, being sold by the mechanics who "threw out" the headset.
 
I thought this thread was going route of the pay issue or something like that. Never thought it would run in this direction. So the amount of noise in the cockpit dictates if a plane is a regional or not? Wow!

I like the poster who asked about a C-17 or a C-5 pilot. How about those B-2 pilots that wear a helmet and travel halfway around the world and back. I guess wearing a helmet makes a pilot a local pilot?

The 170/190 series is a neat looking plane. Sleek and doesn't look like a lawndart. It looks like a mini-737.

As far as bulky headsets go, I like the Bose X. Very comfortable and really works well. I wish I had them back flying the C-12 for eight hours in a day a few years ago. I wore DC then and those were heavy and just not as good.
 
The only good thing about having Browtothebone around this board is that he actually makes the General look good.
 
E-3 crews wear bose noise cancelling. Noise level of the plane is personal prefference. The CRJ is lounder than I like along with the RJ85, MD 80 and so on..

Didn't know that, wow!! And those guys stay airborne for way to long. At least they can get up and walk to the back and ditch those headsets. Whatever it takes to make my life in the office sweet then I'll make it happen. :)

Actually, after flying both B747 and CRJ, I find the CRJ much quieter.

One of the funny stories I heard while flying in on the AWACS as a FE goes something like this..

A F-4 pulls up behind a KC-135. The FO talks to the F-4 asking a bunch of questions and asking how cool it is. The fighter guy full of himself says "watch this." He lights the burners goes under the tanker and loops over the top and comes back to pre-contact and says "how was that?" The tanker captains says that was pretty cool but watch this. The fighter guy watches intently and after a few minutes calls up and says "what are you going to do?" The tanker captains says "well I got up, walk to the back and took a p..s, warmed my lunch and got a some coffee." Figher guy breaks off and heads back to base.

I always thought that was funny.
 
It has noting to do whether they are need it or not. It has to do with the fact that those pilots are paid nada. There is no way they can afford a 500 dollar headset, so they use what they have.
I did the same thing on a CRJ until I had enough extra money to get a Telex.

It is not a RJ. Sorry Brownie.

I hear stories that 170 pilots think they are "cooler" than CRJ and ERJ pilots because the 170 had engines on the wing, like the A320 and 737. They think that makes them just like Airbus and Boeing pilots, So I've heard.

Good one. Nephew of mine is in USC about to start his final year. He is in the AF ROTC program and is away at summer camp in MS. He wants to fly fighters in a bad way. I told him to look at all avenues and understand what each airframe offers. It's all about QOL.

I understand that thought process totally.

I do know that Bose offers the X on a 12-month payment plan with no interest. Pilot receives the product up front and a small gift too. I bought the X on that same plan and received a small handheld GPS which I gave to my boys.

Bose company offers a GREAT support system. I recently sent the headset back for some work and not a cost to me. They replaced the headset ear cups and even set an extra set too. Great product and support network. They have my business for sure!!

Bob Stevens, the genius behind the "There I was..." cartoon, did a version of this. It was B52 v. F4. The only difference was the B-52 guy replying, "I just shut down two engines."

A great series of books. 2 thumbs up!
