Can you guys tell me if:

- AirTran is profitable, and if they have ever had any quarters that have been unprofitable, and if so, when?

-SWA has ever had a loss?

FEDERAL EXPRESS PLANS FOR ZAPMAIL

The Federal Express Corporation said it would accept no orders for its Zapmailer document-transmission machines for ''three to six months'' in order to concentrate on upgrading the system. The company, based in Memphis, said its Zapmail system had suffered losses of more than $200 million since it was introduced in July 1984.
The company is dissatisfied with the quality of transmission, which relies on leased telephone lines, and will begin installing rooftop satellite antennas on customers' buildings and adding new computer switching equipment throughout the country, a spokesman said.

I believe that SWA posted a loss in their first year of operation. Now, since then, they have posted a loss in a quarter here and there, but still have posted annual profits.

Having said that, it's now been around 7-8 years since SWA has posted a quarterly loss. Not a bad record considering all that has happened in and to, the industry in those years.

Good management with a philosophy of "manage in the good times for the bad times."

Actually only one quarterly loss since then, after the acquisition of Morris and during the first Gulf War. No yearly losses since that first year.

Airtran has had a few quarters of losses. They have been profitable 7 years in a row. A few that come to mind, 2 quarters after 9/11, last quarter of 05. They are expected to show a loss on Thurs.

Herb being "the man" started giving out booze (whole bottles) and got the girls in very short skirts and sold tickets while they were boarding. He did some great things back in the day. Now with all the gay and/or old fat girls he has to hedge fuel but he is still "the man" doing what he has to do.
Got to love the guy for making it happen.
Fred makes more money but Herb gets the kewl award! Wish he was an advisor to Fred. :beer:

Which could have happened to any airline. Similar thing just happened with UPS in PHL with a much better outcome.
