I would like to know if anyone has a copy or remembers the hiring minimums for United, Northwest, Delta, American, Continental, and Hawaiian. Do they require a ATP and a Aviation college degree?

I don't remember the specific DAL numbers from back when, but they were requiring a 4 year degree. It didn't have to specifically be an Aviation Degree, just a plain ole 4 year degree.

I don't know mins, but I do know what was competitive at DAL when I was hired. I am the last one so it should be accurate. 3,500 TT, 2,500 Turbine, ATP, FE Written, 1,000 PIC Turbine part 121, line check airman, four year degree in accounting (so you don't have to have an aviation degree, and it is coming in handy on furlough).

WantoflyHI,

If this time of furloughs has shown anything, it is that the aviation degree isn't going to get you a decent job when the axe drops. Diversify, just in case you have the misfortune to find yourself in the same boat one day. I remember the official mins at the majors like UAL/AA/DAL being very low according to Kit D., like 500 hrs., but most people had much more time, more like in the neigborhood of TBK or more. When they do start hiring again, there will be many guys with massive PIC jet time coming over from the regionals if it is still worth the money.

You don't have to have an aviation degree. As others have said, most have a degree in something else.
There are people who have been hired without a degree, but do you want to be in an interview group at your dream company when everyine else interviewing has a degree and you don't?

Pre 9-11, and post 9-11, the big thing the majors want is:
121 PIC time - Turbine or jet.

So your goal to be ready for the next time hiring is hot at the majors, is to have a lot of 121 PIC time.
Get on with a regional as soon as you can, start building 121 time and experience, then upgrade as soon as you can. It does not matter what you upgrade on. I had all my 121 PIC time in a
BE-1900 and I got on with a major.

TK: What was your date of hire? Just curious, thanks.

TB was hired 16 Jul 01 - the last of the hiring boom that ran from 96-01.

We'll only be happy when he's back on property.

I went to the AirInc conference in Atlanta in July 2001 (I think it was the 14th) and found out then that Delta had stopped taking apps and were going to stop hiring for a while. It seemed liked it would be a short term thing then, look where we are now. I was just curious as to when the tap finally shut off. That was the second hiring boom that I missed out on.

Thanks for the info. Best of luck to TK and the other 1300 or so fuloughees, I hope that you are back in a seat soon.

Everyone here is correct I was hire 7/16/01. We took a pool at that time to see when Delta would start hiring again. The biggest naysayer said they wouldn't hire until summer 2003. Nobody saw this one coming, and I am hoping that we see hiring again by 2006. That would be a great Christmas present in 2005.

Hi!

WAAAAAY pre 9-11, for UAL all you needed was a high school diploma and a Private. UAL paid for your instrument/commercial, and then you started groundschool with 250 TT.

Man, that's the way it should be! Did they actually interview you, or just figure that if you're good enough to be a private pilot you must be good enough for them?
