Politics Matter: Political Appointees Must Do More than a Heckuva Job, Brownie
by Edward Wytkind, President
Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO

Come November, your safety, security, and day-to-day job as a professional airline pilot will be on the U.S. ballot.

As you vote for President, you are empowering one person to name all the political appointees who run the agencies that affect pilots: the Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Mediation Board, the Transportation Security Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board, among others.

As professional airline pilots and union members, politics matter. The number of jobs in Washington that change with the advent of a new Administration is staggering. And the power the new appointees wield in the form of carrying out the White House’s mission for their agency is enormous. So as we near the end of appointees of the caliber of Hurricane Katrina “you’re doing a heckuva Job, Brownie,” it’s worth revisiting important issues at stake and how leaders in the next Administration will tackle these issues.

The next President will appoint National Mediation Board members who will preside over labor/management relations including bargaining disputes and organizing drives. The current NMB has ignored the rights of workers. For example, pilots of Atlantic Southeast Airlines had to wait five years before the NMB took steps to bring the process to a successful conclusion. By contrast, in 1998, President Clinton and his NMB refused to intervene in the Northwest Airlines ALPA/management dispute. The pilots were permitted to exercise their rights without government intervention, and eventually a successful agreement was reached. Will we have another President and appointees who subvert the law and exacerbate the deteriorating state of working America? Or will we have an NMB that ensures the right to organize and bargain collectively and helps resolve labor-management disputes?

The next President will appoint negotiators who will determine whether foreign carriers can control U.S. airlines. The future of this industry truly hangs in the balance as we enter the second stage of the U.S.-EU Open Skies agreement. The Bush administration’s appointees have unsuccessfully attempted an end-around our ownership and control rules. Will the next crop of negotiators continue to give away the store to our trading partners? Or will we have trade representatives who put U.S. pilots and other workers first?

The next President will appoint a TSA Administrator who will determine if we’ll finally get a universal biometric screening system for aviation workers. This program has been 20 years in the making. Will we get new leaders who allow a hodge-podge system to continue? Or will we have a TSA that streamlines access procedures, delivers one level of security, and ensures that airline workers are treated fairly?

The next President will appoint FAA leaders who will decide if airlines can continue to force pilots to work tired. The FAA’s rules are inadequate and antiquated. And the pressure to increase productivity has ratcheted up in this post-bankruptcy era. Will we continue to face stonewalling from an FAA that sides with airlines and refuses to change flight-limitation rules? Or will we have an FAA that understands why it’s foolish to continue “pilot pushing” and, instead, seeks to modernize the rules?

The next President will appoint leaders who will decide whether America will have a first-class FAA. A critical ATC staffing shortage was exacerbated by an Administrator who ran roughshod over collective bargaining rights. Critical aircraft maintenance—some estimates say 25 percent of all work performed—is now outsourced to foreign stations that are not required to drug and alcohol test their workers, are not subject to strict FAA oversight and are not required to follow any security rules. And the safety needs of airline workers have been shortchanged. Will we continue to have an FAA that ignores congressional mandates and refuses to bargain with workers in good faith? Or are we going to have an FAA that works with its employees to deliver the safest aviation system possible?

It’s up to all of us to choose. And, we are entrusting the Chief Executive we select to appoint qualified, competent public servants. We’re not picking just one person—we’re choosing that leader’s mission and the full cast the leader assembles to carry out that mission.
Politics matter. Our engagement matters. Over the next nine months, we will help decide the direction of the United States and the U.S. airline industry.

The AFL-CIO’s Transportation Trades Department (TTD) consists of 32 affiliated unions, including ALPA, that together represent several million workers in all modes of transportation. TTD advocates on behalf of its member unions before Congress and the Executive Branch, including federal agencies, to protect good jobs, defend workers’ rights, enhance transportation safety and security, and ensure adequate funding for the U.S. transportation infrastructure. Good post.

I wonder how many pilots realize McCain is part of the machine destroying the American middle class. For that matter I wonder how long until airline pilots realize they're middle class.

I would like to think I am upper middle class thank you....McCain has a dream. A dream that one day that his kids can own a horde of American blue collar union workers for Wal-Mart pay. A dream that he can walk down aisles and see no American made product on the shelf. A dream where there is no middle class to annoy the real people who own and run this country. A land where no one is allowed to protest against their current government, that would be treason...etc.

I hope Jay Leno has a field day with him as he has had with Bush...Amen

On another note. I can now understand why we have militias. I think its very un-American to oppose them since it is our constitutional right.

I'd say from what I've seen of my friends and people I know $100k a year is middle middle. One couple that makes $350k and another that makes about $420 are the upper middle class ones. If you're in that group congratulations. Even though you're getting taxed heavily it's a good place to be. The only ones I know that are doing really well are those making closer to a million a year. Pre 80's they paid 75% in taxes, now it's 15% with tons of tax breaks to lower it even further. Reagan started it with with trickle down economics(rob from the middle class and give to the poor and wealthy) and it's been chugging along ever since.

This is a great letter that was sent to me. Before you vote for Barack Husein Obama read this. Remember that there's more to life than the airlines.

Here is something you should listen to before you vote for a new President. Many politicians are stating they have great plans for mandated health care. One could argue they are simply buying votes. While there are many cases where some type of National Health care would work the over all effect I fear will be like the Canadian health care system. Some thoughts I have on the issue are the following.

Many people elect not to buy health insurance but live in expensive homes and have a garage full of fun toys. It is their choice and they simply choose not to purchase insurance. Many younger people spend hundreds of dollars each month on entertainment and yet choose not to buy insurance. Again it is their choice but the politicians keep talking about 47 million uninsured Americans. Many of the 47 million are those I just talked about. Yet many more are between jobs so they are temporally uninsured. They to are counted in the 47 million.

Many people simply can't afford the cost of insurance because they are in the lower income brackets. Maybe we should have a commission to look into why health insurance is so expensive. I know from my Doctor friends who tell me their liability insurance goes up every year by 30% to 40%. Most are paying over $125,000 for insurance each year. I recall some years ago here in Arizona where most OBGYN's stopped delivering babies because they
could not get or afford insurance. So lets see what causes this and correct the problem. That would be a start.

The other issue I have is we will be forced to pay insurance for people who use drugs, abuse alcohol, chain smokers, HIV patients, and people who don't care what they eat and are over weight and out of shape. So people who take great care of their bodies by working out, eating right, and abstaining from harmful substances will get to pay for those who care less.

Canada has run out of money with their system and some years ago closed all their hospitals for the month of December. According to a Canadian
neighbor who runs the health system in Alberta there are only now 12 MRI machines in the country. He has a home here because he plans to retire here. You want to know what he told me. He said if he is older and gets sick he wants to be here no in Canada. Last week we needed a CAT Scan for my wife. It was done is less than 24 hours after the Doctor gave us
the orders. Try that in Canada.

While visiting friends in Germany where they have socialized medicine I was shocked to hear our friends tell us they can't afford to buy a home so they rent a small flat. He is 56 years old and a kitchen designer and has a good job with a big company. They told me that to cover the cost of the health insurance program the government has had to keep raising tax's. He pays 45% income tax and if his wife works she pays 60%. There are no deductions like we have here for anything. There is also a 19% sales tax.
So in his care he is paying 64% tax and she pays 79% tax. What would your life style be if you paid tax's like this. They have 8% employment in all
of Germany and 22% in Berlin. The people simply have no money left after tax's to buy much other tan food and clothing. If you go there don't bother to look for big housing developments like we have here because they don't exist. Infarct we only saw one building under construction as we drove through souther Germany. It is expendable income that keeps our ecomany growing and people employed. It has been proven over and over again. The more tax's the worse our ecomany.

We do need to look into why things related to health insurance are so expensive and then do something about it. But turning it over to the government is not the answer. They simply rob us then say they need to raise tax's. Remember the Social Security Trust Fund. It is empty because I believe it was a President named Carter who said it was okay for the
government to take the funds and borrow them for the general fund. A promise was made in the beginning the funds would be held in trust for
those who put money into the program. Okay where is the money I have been paying into Social Security for 45 years?. We simply can't trust the politicians to do what is right. If you put money into a bank account and the money was gone when you retired someone would be going to jail. But not the politicians.

Lastly I have family and friends that have live in countries with socialized medicine and the service they received was a joke. Long lines only to be given an aspen and told to come back in a month and they could be seen by a doctor. In another case a mother of 8 children in Canada was told she would have to go to another hospital far from her home because
the hospital she was at had run out of money for her care. She had cancer and later died. With National health care as many politicians want someone
will have to make a decision on who lives and who dies based on available funds. It is simply a matter of not having the money to buy more MRI
machines in Canada or by restricting the number of machines a great percentage of people needing the test will die before they are tested. Think about that and who will be controlling your life and medical treatment. Will a National Medical Health Insurance program create a two tear program. Canada is finally starting to let some doctors start private practices again. So now you pay for the system through tax's but if you want better service you can pay out of your pocket as well.

I hear on TV we are in a medical crises but when It was found that I had cancer I was in the hospital in no time at all. The Thyroid was removed and I received treatments. I had a choice of when and who operated on me and the type of treatment I would receive. So far I have been cancer free for a year and it was all covered by the medical insurance I selected and it paid for everything. Not bad for a system in crises as some represent.

Is insurance expensive here, yes it is. But we need to understand why and do something about it. Turning it over to the same people who can't seem to protect our boarders, protect Social Security Funds, or come up with a good program to deal with all the illegal aliens will only destroy the best health care system in the world.

Please understand what the person you will vote for has to say on this subject then decide if you want him or her or someone else. Our entire way
of life could be affected by the next President.

I agree the costs of health care need to be looked into. Both of the people I previously mentioned as upper middle class have jobs in health care, both $300k+ and they're not doctors. I'm not saying we should turn our country into a clone of Europe. Our system of democracy in my opinion is the best in the world. I'm just saying that it's been corrupted from what our founding fathers intended. A select group of wealthy people is trying to destroy the middle class, because of both greed and concern that a strong healthy middle class will challenge their power.

I wasn't attacking you. I just thought it was a good letter. I have some good ones regarding the 1st and 2nd amendments as well but I'll save those for later.

This letter is classic. It would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that she is completely serious. I couldn't post the picture of her home but you'd think she made 80k per year based on the nice furniture, hardwood floors, and the big HDTV:

Sharon Jasper has been victimized. Sharon Jasper has been rabidly wronged. She has become a Section 8 care case "the victim of ever changing public housing policies. Sharon Jasper has spent 57 or her 58 years dedicated to one cause and one cause only, and has nothing to show for her dedicated servitude. She has lived in Section 8 housing all but 1 of her 58 years. It was a legacy passed down from her parents who moved into Section 8 housing in 1949 when she was six months old. She has passed the legacy down to her children, but fears they may have to get jobs to pay for the utilities and deposits. She laments about her one year hiatus from the comfort of her Section 8 nirvana,' I tried it for a year..you know, working and all. It's not anything I would want to go through again, or wish on anyone in my family, but I am damn proud of that year.'

Sharon was moved out of her St. Bernard housing project after hurricane Katrina and into a new, yet albeit, substandard quarterage. As can be noted from the above photo of her new Section 8 home, it is repugnant and not suitable for someone of Sharon Jasper's seniority status in the system. 'Don't be fooled by them hardwood floors,' saysSharon.'They told me they were putting in scraped wood floors cause it was more expensive and elegant, but I am not a fool "that was just a way to make me take scratched up wood because I am black. The 60 inch HD TV? It may look nice but it is not a plasma. It's not a plasma because I'm black. Now they want me to pay a deposit and utilities on this dump.' 'Do you know why?'

She has held her tongue in silence through the years of abuse by the system, but it came to a head at the New Orlean's city council meeting where discussions were under way about the tearing down of the St. Bernard projects. When a near riotous exchange between groups opposing the tearing down of St. Bernard and groups wanting the dilapidated buildings torn down and newer ones built,Sharonunleashed verbal hell with her once silenced tongue. The object of her oratory prowess was an acquiescent poor white boy in attendance. The context of her scathing rebuke was, 'Just because you pay for my house, my car, my big screen and my food, I will not be treated like a slave!' and 'Back up and Shut up! Shut up, white boy! Shut up, white boy!'

Recapping from the mental log of the city council minutes in her head,Sharonrepines,'Our families have been displaced all over the United States. They are being forced to commit crimes in cities they are unfamiliar with. It is a very uncomfortable situation for them. Bring them back, then let's talk about redevelopment.'Sharondirects the reporter's attention across the street toDuncanPlazawhere homeless people are living in tents and states that, 'I might do better out there with one of these tents.' She further lamented her sentiments about her situation,' I might be poor, but I don't have to live poor.

My guess is that she's voting for Obama.

Where was Wytkind in the 90's? That is when the proliferation of US jobs leaving the US started. I don't recall Slick or "hop on my Gulfscream and warn the world of the evils of global warming" Al Gore voicing any concern. Neither party showed any major concern. Some politicians gave a gratuitous concern but that was it. Obama might be for pilots but you need business pax in the back willing to pay a fair fare. I don't see any party too concerned about the average Joe.

Hate to burst your bubble, but actually it was Reagan who decided that this would be a good idea.

Carter had his issues, no doubt. But give credit to (or blame) to those who deserve it.

Peace.

How is that bursting my bubble?

Funny how brainless some of you are. I love how you want to turn it into a Democrat vs. Republican thing.

When are you gonna wake up and realize it a Washington, D.C. thing?

That came off very rude and I apologize. But seriously...what difference does it make which President did it? Does that change or solve anything? Am I supposed to say "Reagan did it? Well gee, never mind?"

Apology accepted. I'm just tired of the Dems getting blamed for everything, while that 'god-like' persona named Reagan gets a wash on everything.

I was a right-wing, red-meat eating Republican for most of my life. Then I started to realize that my own party was doing me no favors in the long run. Both parties make mistakes. Dems and Republicans. So I take a long hard look at the ENTIRE candidate, and then decide who will do the LEAST harm to me and my family.

Rant over.

Peace.
