I use to enjoy the PIT airport. Not anymore.. I've been up for about 20 hours now and everywhere I move in this airport all I hear, over and over, is....

CAUTION.. MOVING WALK IS NEARING IT'S END... PLEASE ATTEND TO CHILDREN AND WATCH YOUR STEP... THANK YOU.

First in a 50 something female voice, and then her 60 something husband..

It doesn't matter which terminal... It just runs over and over and over again.

A bed is only 3 hours away!!

Don't forget:

"Welcome to Pittsburgh International Airport, a smoke-free terminal. After entering the terminal, all smoking material must be extinguished. Smoking is available inside eating and drinking establishments where posted." This is played throughout the entire airport, not just at the entrances.

Also:

"When using the moving walk, face forward and hold onto the handrail. Also, if standing on the moving walk, please stay to the right so that others may walk on your left. At the end of the moving walk, please watch your step."

Three years' worth of multi-hour layovers has finally paid off.

Oh, and we all love the lady at the landside information desk with the EXTREMELY nasally-sounding voice who mumbles and slurs her words together: "...please come to the landsideformation desk..."

It's a wake up call to how much has changed in PIT in the past couple of years. There used to be so much activity in that airport that you couldn't hear the old bag unless you were right on top of one of the moving walkways. Now that's all you hear.

I hope the terminal D Wok n Roll keeps getting enough crew business to stay open. They have got just about the only edible airport Chinese food in the US.

PIT is not very well designed. Thirty minutes of walking, riding trains, and taking moving sidewalks, and you're still not at the gate yet.

I have to agree with the comment about the Chinese food in terminal D- great food for an airport and better than most stand alone Chinese restaurants in the US. Please keep them busy so they don't go away.

Hey, don't forget that you can shut up the "Welcome to Pittsburgh International Airport, a smoke-free terminal...." recording if you grab one of the hand mike-lookin' things at each gate, the ones they use to do boarding announcements. Key the mike and it cuts off the recording, at least that's the way it works in Commuter-Land.

That's why, in the E-gates, the recording usually says:

"Welcome to Pittsburgh In..................................."

I heard someone talking the other day that there is a free WiFi network that anyone with a laptop can log into. Anyone have info on this? I would guess it to be somewhere central like in the foodcourt area by McD's. That'd be a great way to waste away time if you are doing 'Airport Appreciation' there!

It's true

There IS a WiFi "hotspot" in the food court. There are even ads for it on the tables...

I haven't lugged MY computer over there, but did use someone else's machine to check my e-mail while snacking on Mickey-D's.

A note about Concourse D Wok and Roll:

The owner sold D and moved to B. D is still pretty good, and they make things fresh. But if you noticed a subtle change in flavor of General Tso, it's because it's under different ownership now. If you want the truly fantastic food we all used to flock over to D for, go to B. Not as much seating over there though.

Commuterland has a Schlotzky's Deli. 'Nuff said.

:D

I'm convinced that when I die they will cut me open and find a whole Thai Chicken pizza in my gullet. Just a theory.

Why don't you guys come on over to the fractional world, and you wouldn't have to hear it!

If I say okay, is there a job offer forthcoming?

You guys cry like babies! Try being based up in CLE and ponder whether you want the 7 dollar bagel sandwich or the ex-con made whopper with questionable toppings, either way make sure you got 45 minutes to wait for the 'fast food.' I'd take any US Air hub for airport concession/retail in a second despite the potential for annoying moving walkways. Trust me it can be alot worse.

You won't find me complaining too much about PIT. Of all the airports I've been to, PIT has the most food and shopping, at reasonable prices, and tons of quiet places to "hide" on layovers.

Ah, yes, CLE's Great American Bagel... Or is it All-American Bagel?

Either way it has Great All-American Slow Service. The wait for my sandwich for lunch the other day was simply astonishing... I guess a Turkey Club with let/tom/mayo is something they don't make very often. I watched in utter amazement as FOUR people behind me in line had their sandwiches made and checked out before I saw my sandwich wrapped up.

Besides, the "toppings" at the BK aren't too objectionable as long as you don't mind body parts/extretions/secretions from the individual who prepared the "sandwich".

:D

Did they get the employees for these two outlets from the same halfway house or WHAT? The gal (I assume it was a female) who was carefully construction my sandwich asked "would you lerurk blah blah blah", which after being repeated was apparently meant to mean "would you like your bread toasted"... To which I replied "no". Then I watched her/it put the bread in the toaster-thingie! I pointed out that I'd said "no" and she got so flustered she had to relinquish "sandwich command" to the apparently male artiste... Who appeared to be moving in a time warp because no movement was readily apparent...

I think I blew a couple of fuses in his brain when I pointed out that my FA had taken a pass on the pickle wedge that is included with sandwiches and he should give me hers. This was agreed to with artiste #1 but apparently artiste #2 didn't "get the memo", and he simply didn't know what to do. I suggested he wrap up two (as in, get this now, TWO) pickle wedges and just let me move along. He actually stared blankly at the sandwich prep table while he pondered what action to take next... Which was to wrap up ONE pickle and hand me my bag. I patiently asked for a second (this, of course, for the third time) and he just stood there with a slightly glazed expression, waited five seconds, then slowly wrapped up another, which he THEN PUT IN ANOTHER BAG!!

By this time my crew was halfway-finished with lunch (noting, of course, that the FA ordered AFTER me and had to have something microwaved). I actually timed this entire episode, from "I'd like a turkey club on sourdough", to change and receipt in-pocket, at 11-1/2 minutes. If I'm lyin' I'm dyin'.

Also, beware the 50 cent single slice of cheese.

Very effective layout and design that will get you from curbside to the gates in a pretty short amount of time even with the TSA delays.. I could think of about 10 other airports that are much worse off than PIT. Just a tad sad present day with regards to the lack of traffic that goes through on a daily and weekly basis.. Use to be a very busy airport. Good sky mall there and food court also.

I do agree about CLE, lousy lousy

I went through PIT as a pax a couple times in recent weeks... it really is a nice airport.

Now BAD.... have any of you ever been to London Heathrow? Seriously, the three oldter terminals (T1-3) there have got to be the worst I've ever encountered.

I miss PIT!!!

After flying out of IAD for the last 3 months I have a new appreciation for what we had in PIT. I guess sometime you just don't know how good things are.

its still superior in EVERY respect to phl....theres a suckhole airport if i've ever seen one

and yeah the D wok was good, haven't been there in awhile, is the E schlotzky's even still open? didn't know anything was still over there

free wifi at mc'd's rocks, too bad theres only ONE wall outlet in the ENTIRE food court, (really really bad planning there)

too bad all those pit girls they have for gate agents are becoming more and more surly every day

and of course the assinine tsa rule that you can't walk from one plane to the other if your swapping (friggin wand monkey morons)

Nope, they closed it down and I think that bar in the back now runs the place. :(

On thing is for sure, if I have to spend 4 hours on a productivity break I want to spend it in PIT. With all the food, shopping, quiet areas to sleep or read, clean sh*tters, and video game arcades you will always have something to do.

I love the PIT airport!

Maybe its just me but I can't understand why people can be so incompetent...

my new wife and I were in ATL last week coming back from our honeymoon...well the AirTran concourse has a smoking room and a vending machine that doesn't take quarters or dollars (still tryin to figure that one out) so we hike it over to the very last concourse (what is it there, Q?) to get some Pizza Hut...

...after waiting 5 minutes behind one person in line we go up and order a cheez, supreme, and meat lovers...well well well...they have ONE cheeeez ready, and can't do supreme, so fine...two meats and a cheeeez...the girl says "Are you sure, I can get you another cheeeeeeeez in 5 minutes?" I said "no that's okay we want to go back to our gate to sleep for the next 4 hours" so....12 minutes later we get our pizzas....that they had to make....even though everything was ready....

the whole time asking myself "why are people incompetent"? Especially making food...we're not doing long division here...

Anywho...thanks for the heads up on the Chinese at PIT (can't remember who posted that)...almost had some at MCO while waiting for them to call the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** exit rows...but thought better of it...

The Original Oyster House...

Doesn't get much better than that unless you are downtown PIT.

Dash, Dash, Dash,

Where is that "allucaneatclams" avatar?:D

You're killing some of us here.

well, i logged on one day, and noticed my avatar had been changed to the Apu icon, tried to change it back and the new size limit was in effect and all my avs where setup for the more reasonable original size, I then received a msg from one of the mods saying that they had gotten complaints about my avatar and my .sig and that i would have to change them (even though they had already taken my avatar away) and that as they is, the rest of the story, you can thank the overly 'sensitive' babies on this board for the disappearance

While we're on the subject of airport whining, whats up with the lack of power outlets at DFW? I spent a good hour hunting down one on a layover in March to plug in my cell phone.

Also I guess theres still no way to get from the DL terminal to AA without having to get rescreened?

I was just in SFO the other day and had to do the same thing...not very many power outlets that work over there. The airport layout/facilities weren't the greatest either....after spending 7 hours there to catch a flight I was glad to be out.

Now PDX and SEA...much better. :D
