Unions are subject to market forces. If you are extremely profitable like UPS, you can demand more and the company has to give. UPS remains viable in the financial markets to raise capital. If you are only marginally profitable like DAL, UAL, etc in 2000, and demand more, the company become unprofitable and is unable to raise capital, because the financial markets will not invest in a non-profitable company. So in the end market forces drive what union can demand.
