Pilots at Low Cost Carriers Gloat over Major Airline Pilot job losses.

The MCGRWL-HIll Companies Aviation Leek and Space Lechnology

Donald Hall/Washington

Even though Tom Smith had several DUI's, no College Degree and very little flight experience he forked over $12,500 to attend Valuejet Airlines DC-9 training in Miami Florida. "I remember it like it was yesterday" said Smith, 35 of Atlanta Ga, "I couldn't get hired by Delta so the next best thing was go ahead and work at Valujet" For Smith it worked out well as several of the Legacy Airlines such as United and USAirways went into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection soon after the September 11 attacks in 2001, laying off thousands of highly skilled aviators, meanwhile Valujet who renamed itself Airtran remained profitable through the turbulent years after 2001, albeit on the backs of underpaid pilots like Smith.

Smith, like many of his co-workers now gloat about how good they have it at Airtran. "I am a B-717 Captain and even though I would never ever been hired at Northwest, I get to gloat about how good I have it while the Northwest guys are in a hurt locker " remarked Lye Puckett, 53, of Macon Ga. "Heck they think we are Scabs, and even though I forked over a ton of cash for this job I feel pretty good about myself" "This is where I want to be" gleemed Tyrone Webb, 37, Atlanta Ga. If United offered me a job today, I would say NO! I have always wanted to work here at Airtran this is my career choice" But for Webb it is not that easy, even though most Major Ailrines are not hiring, once hiring resumes after all the thousands or recalled pilots are back to work, Webb would stand little chance of obtaining an interview at one of the Major Airlines, why? "Qualifications and background" says Allen Boyed of Aviation Consulting LLC, in Evergreen Colorado, these guys were very substandard applicants in the late 90's they couldn't get hired at a McDonalds let alone Jetblue.

Bob Kundig, 34 of Lancaster PA, was one of the many of Furloughed pilots who found themsleves out on the street shortly after 9/11. "I just laugh at those comments, it really is funny since most of them would sell their mother to fly a Boeing 777" "As for me, I know soon I will be back to work and those clowns can kiss my six!" Kundig, a former Naval Aviator that flew F-18's in Desert Storm remarked about how some of these guys really are pretty childish, which makes sense they never were hired at American, Delta or United.

"I thank the Human Resource Department over at the "G.O." that some of these guys are not wearing the Delta wings of gold, says Capt. Don Onufer, "I wouldn't want to fly with any of them" Paul Detrick, 38 of Erlanger KY who is a Pilot for Comair Airlines turned down an offer of employment with Airtran last week "I didn't want to limit myself by working with some of those guys who are former Eastern Scabs, I went on strike for 89 days and I know what it is like to be stabbed in the back by a SCAB" Detrick stands a pretty good chance of flying for a Major Airline as he was an intern for United in the mid 90's. "United told me to get some Pilot in Command time and don't pay for my job and they would gladly hire me into a Flight Officer position"

Airtran may be profitable now, but with United's TED and Delta's Song along with regional carriers such as Comair and Skywest that may change. Airtran couldn't operate Airbus aircraft hainvg to rely on Ryan International Airlines to do such flying. Pilot training was cited as one of the major downfalls to Airtran operating an Aribus Fleet. "They couldn't make it through the course" said Pierre Windsor of Duluth MN. "I ran the ground school with Airtran and Atalntic Coast Pilots, the ACA guys passed the Airtran guys failed miserbly" stressed Windsor, 58 a former Air Canada Check Captain. "It all comes down to the quality of people you have hired as Pilots" says Retired General Robert E. Lee, who now works for Delta Airlines as a Pilot recruiter, "We look for a solid Employment record and good solid flying skills along with an Education, of course if you are on a Scab list Forgettaboutit! " Mr. Lee who sometimes moonlights as a Delta Airlines spin doctor is widely considered an Expert on Airline Buisness models and trends.

For now the Airtran pilots like Smith, Puckett, and Webb can Gloat about their luck in the industry but if history proves correct again, what comes around goes around, even for the Airtran Pilots.

You have way too much time on your hands . . . . .

FWIW, you might be surprised to learn that most of us are degreed, non-DUI sporting, highly qualified and trained pilots. We have former test-pilots, Air force 1 pilots, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy grads, etc.

In fact, many furloughed "major" pilots were very surprised to learn at the recent job fairs that they did not meet our requirements for PIC time . . . . .

So put that in your bong and smoke it . . . . .

No doubt, but when someone is that spooled up, you know they're being struck through the heart. Never thought I'd live to see this....I'm lovin it! Time for a Big Mac....

Pretty funny stuff. What should be even more hilarious is to see how many people miss the sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek, grammatical and style errors, (Not to mention this post...) thus mistaking the satire for a "real" article. Any takers?

Ty Webb PFT?

Now checking with Bobby's definition of PFT, if you did not have a DC-9 type when hired by Value Jet, you are not guilty of engaging in PFT and could be interviewed by the anti-PFT fractions on this board and have chance of getting a job. But if you had a DC-9 type when you were hired by ValueJet, you would be guilty of a PFT sin and banned from the chance of ever working for an airline where the anti-PFT fraction of this board were doing interviews. So the bottom line is: Is Ty Webb guilty of PFT? and does he ever have a chance of getting a real job?

PFT- Hell, no! I never even paid for my own ATP, thank you.

As for getting a real job . . . . . already got that, thanks!

I had to chuckle when I read this, referring to AirTran pilots:

"these guys were very substandard applicants in the late 90's they couldn't get hired at a McDonalds let alone Jetblue."

Extra300s, that's a pretty bold statement, coming from a UAL pilot. You don't even want me to go into the backgrounds of some of the people in my newhire class at UAL during my stint over there. Many pilot's at my regional never saw upgrade because they were off to UAL. I'm sure anyone that has flown for a regional airline for any length of time knows exactly what I'm talking about.

It's sad for them now, because they were hired on at UAL with very little if any PIC time. Now as furloughees they are hosed due to lack of experience. No more special priveledges to get them in the door.

I love it here at AirTran as well as the several other ex-UAL guys who are here. Take your sh*t-talk elsewhere.

Man alive, I thought it was a great article! Sooo true.....? I also moonlight as a Chip-n-dale dancer.....for the ladies!

Bye Bye--General Lee

UALX727...Dont know who you are.. but glad your here! I have many friend over at UAL furloughed ...many Ive tried to get hired here. Some people are never gonna be happy no matter where they are..and when they see other pilots at a airline that they like .....it just kills them! Ive been here 3 years ..will upgrade in a few months and couldnt be happier! Trust me UALX727 I know what your talking about with the hiring at UAL from the regionals. I did IOE at a large regional carrier with newhires that couldnt fly there way out of a paper bag...only to see them hired at the "LEGACY" carriers..!!And isnt it funny that many of the "LEGACY" carrier pilots on furlough now dont even meet out MINS at all!! Anyway.....all the guys and gals starting class here ........WELCOME ABOARD!! Glad to have you...enjoy the 717 or 737.

College Degree

"I did IOE at a large regional carrier with newhires that couldn't fly there way out of a paper bag...only to see them hired at the "LEGACY" carriers."

I bet they all had college degrees, and as I have stated as often as possible, a college degree has nothing to do with flying an airplane, nothing. Turbo Jet PIC in the 1000's of hours has alot to do with flying an airplane. If you want to be a pilot you must get turbo jet PIC time as soon as possible. For pilots starting out skip college, start flying and do the degree on the side at one of those "pay your fee get your B places" so at age 27 you have 2000 hours jet PIC and a degree from Bumble Bee state in Water Basket Recognition. Again the degree has nothing to do with flying airplanes, it only opens doors.

"...several DUI's..." I knew I was under-qualified for AirTran!:p

I'll have to get right on that. Do I just need more than two or is there a specific number I can shoot for?:D TC

PFT --- Gimme a break!

So when does PFT "officially" start in this J@ck@$$es mind?

Should Delta pay for my private? My commercial. If I am military should I refuse to pay for an ATP on principle? Yes, I too will sit at home unemployed, no HAPPILY unemployed! I'll tell my starving kids and my bread winning wife -- F those bastards I am not engaging in morally wrong-headed PFT schemes. ANd F Southwest for paying all those pilots thousand a month when they made them get a 737 type. Lucky thing I am smarter and suprerior to all of those scabby pr!cks!!!!

-Give me a break!
