PEOPLExpress will be the name of a Virginia-based start-up carrier that hopes to begin flying passengers as early as this summer.
If successful, that would resurrect the brand of one of the first U.S. low-cost carriers to emerge following deregulation. The original PEOPLExpress flew from 1981 through 1987, when it was acquired by Continental Airlines.

"Our goal is to make flying fun again," PEOPLExpress COO Mike Morisi says in a release announcing the new airline. "We will eliminate most fees for items such as checked bags and seat assignments … ."
The newest incarnation of PEOPLExpress will be headquartered in Newport News, Va., where it also will operate a base at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. PEOPLExpress says it plans to fly Boeing 737-400 jets with economy-class seating throughout the cabin.
The company says it has filed its initial certification paperwork with the Federal Aviation Administration to become a regularly scheduled passenger airline, adding it plans to do the same "shortly" with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airline says it will announce specific routes and begin taking reservations once it clears those regulatory hurdles.
Still, the carrier gave a glimpse of what its start-up route-map might look like.
In its release, PEOPLExpress says its "mission" will be to fly to "markets currently underserved by major carriers, (offering) deeply discounted fares to select cities in the eastern U.S."
And in a press kit distributed prior to its start-up announcement, PEOPLExpress says it "plans to initially serve destinations in Florida, New England, the Great Lakes, and Mid-Atlantic regions."
In the release, PEOPLExpress adds:
This same low-cost service will be offered to other cities, such as Pittsburgh, Providence, West Palm Beach and Newark, where airline consolidation over the past few years has led to a reduction of non-stop air service.
PEOPLExpress says that, after its launch, it hopes to add service to Boston, Orlando "and many cities abandoned by other carriers. Specific route structures will be shared at a later date."
The company says it's still finalizing details on its fare structure, but will eschew adding fees to ticket prices that begin at $69 each way.
"All fares will include seat assignments and there will be no fees for the first two bags," the airline says in the prospectus handed out prior to its start-up announcement.
"Passengers will be seated in a single cabin with 158 seats with a pricing structure that is significantly more affordable than regional service provided by feeder airlines," COO Morisi says.

737-400? A classic round dial 800? Those things can still make money at $100 a barrell?

As already noted, a bad idea. If SWA is dropping the classics like lead ballons, how will they make them work...

Some pilot told them it was a great idea, you know how we know everything about running a airline!

AND I'm sure there are guys lining up to work there for $50 per hour to fly left seat on those "big airplanes!"

Just when you think consolidation may fix the industry, these start-ups are gonna start popping up and help keep the pay down!

Good market. As a Tranny, PHF has always had great loads. SWA closing of PHF was the biggest surprise of the deal thus far. For me, that is.
 
Ah yes, People's Distress. Carry your bag to the airplane and buy your ticket onboard. Hey it works for Greyhound, why not. Maybe they'll sell tickets to stand at half price. Can't be worse than wedging into a CRJ.

What does this have to do with government jobs? The jobs at the legacies were fairly cushy, some of the best jobs in the middle-class, until deregulation and low-cost entrants put downward pressure on pay and benefits.

This isn't entrepreneurship, it's re-animating a failed business-model, Frankenstein-style. They'll probably have the pilots toss bags and work the ticket-counter just like the original ("team-players," only.)

It will be a miracle if they'll last even half as long.

In a few years, we'll see an Independence Air, and the cycle of life will continue.
 
If it gets off the ground i will be shocked !!! Wasn't PanAm and Braniff starting up again....

There was both a Pan Am II, a National II, and a Braniff II. All now studied by paleontologists.
 
This nonsense never seems to end. This idea is crazier than these clowns trying to get California Pacific going. Its nice to see people chase their dreams, but sometimes a little reality is in order. Like California Pacific, it will probably never get off the ground and if it does, it will never make it. You can bet on that! Fun fantasy though.
 
Usually its a scam to attract investors in love with the idea of owning an airline but having no clue as to what is required. This guy is going to take the money and run. Based in NN/Williamsburg? Give me a break!
