Hello to all. Here is the latest news.
Pilots for Effective, Accountable, Responsible Leadership
PEARL Group. Bringing You The
United Pilots Association (UPA)
September, 2006, Update
First, thank you all for your support and encouragement.
Many of you have been asking about our progress. Since we are laboring without the benefit of trip drops, progress has been measured, but continuous.
We have our core leadership group in place. We are receiving top-notch legal advice. We are working with the pilot, who, with his associated advisors, offered to our present union an alternative to the 550 note distribution—an alternative that we believe was vastly superior to and safer than the limited choices we were given. We are putting the finishing touches on our website which will be your source of information on our new union, including the policies that will make our United Pilots Association operate in a way vastly different than that of our current representation. We think you will be very pleased with these ideas that will return information and power to you, the membership.
Where do we go from here, and how can you help?
The process for securing our new union is boiler-plate: we need to get ballot cards into the hands of all our pilots and we need to get 50% + 1 back, signed, asking for UPA to represent us. Once we get our 50% + 1, the National Mediation Board will hold a representational election us. (Note: you can sign a ballot card for UPA, then vote for ALPA in the subsequent election, so the first ballot is free. We advocate you sign a card so that UPA and ALPA can compete for the privilege of representing us.)
This process sounds simpler than it is. We are limited by the NMB in what we can do on company property. So this drive will be won using word–of-mouth, email and the Internet.
This is where you come in: we need you to forward this email to every United pilot you know. If they want to be included in the email tree, they should send an email to our Communications Chairman, Michael Camilleri, at javascript
arent.ComposeTo('[email protected]', '');. Talk this up with your coworkers. Print this Update and hand it out to your coworkers. And watch for the announcement that our—your—Website is operating.
The Website will include interesting benefits to you, added as we progress:
We will sell PEARL tie tacks, to be worn in place of the pin of the outgoing union. Funds raised from these sales will ONLY fund representation efforts. We’re not taking any pay. Wearing these will increase awareness of United pilots’ new union.
We will also have a Donate feature so that you can contribute to establishing your new union. Much legal advice and guidance is needed and it costs money. ALL money you donate funds organizing expenses. Not trip drops. Not hotels in Maui.
We will have a downloadable page of United Pilot Association (UPA) business cards that you can print out and hand to your coworkers to help spread the good news.
The site will eventually include an automatic email signup function.
Finally, we will have, at the appropriate time (per NMB rules), a downloadable ballot card you can sign and return to us.
For now, the best thing you can do is make your coworkers aware of us. Response to our efforts has been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. We now believe that getting our own union is not only possible, but inevitable. We’re just helping the process along.
Once again, thank you for your ongoing and increasing support. That, more than anything, is what keeps us going. And stay tuned for the launch of your Website and the beginning of United pilots’ new voice.
Sincerely,
PEARL Group
