I'm willing to give Snowback the benefit of the doubt and consider his response to be tongue-in-cheek.

You wouldn't be the first one to suggest that!
Realistically though, property taxes aside, a house that costs double SHOULD not double your living expenses...unless you have an abnormally high percentage of your income going towards a mortgage.
Unless food, gas, beer and everything else is double, I just don't see it...of course I'm relying on math...and you know me and math...or maybe not.
Maybe I'm wrong.
