February 8, 2007Just hours after losing a $10 billion bid to take over Delta Air Lines last week, US Airways’ top executive Doug Parker was arrested in Scottsdale on suspicion of drunken driving.Related LinksNews

http://spinbox.freedom.com/?RC=55036615&AI=5603&RANDOM=129676268The CEO of the Tempe-based airline was clocked in his black BMW at 65 mph — 20 miles faster than the posted speed limit — on Jan. 31 at Pima Road just south of Bell Road, according to a police report.

Parker told the officer who pulled him over that he was coming from the Bird’s Nest, a nightly party at the FBR Open golf tournament, where he told police he downed three beers in two hours, according to the report. Two passengers were with him.

A US Airways spokeswoman told the Tribune late Thursday the 45-year-old executive, whose given name is William Douglas Parker, was giving friends a ride after they had too much to drink. Parker declined to comment. But the spokeswoman, Elise Eberwein, said she talked to him about the arrest.

Eberwein said Parker told her he “is embarrassed beyond words and knows more is expected of him.”

She added: “Knowing Doug, I do know he would not get behind the wheel of a car if he felt too impaired to drive.”

During the 11:30 p.m. traffic stop that night, the officer’s report noted Parker had watery eyes, alcohol on his breath and slurred speech. Eberwein said the description “shocked and mortified” Parker.

Parker went through roadside sobriety tests before the officer took him to a nearby outpost to draw his blood and officially book him.

Scottsdale police spokesman Sgt. Mark Clark said Parker was released and sent home in a taxi, a normal procedure during DUI crackdowns.

The arrest means Parker’s blood-alcohol level is believed to have been above the legal limit of .08.

Just how much alcohol was in Parker’s system will be determined when a crime lab tests his blood, Clark said.

Those results were not available late Thursday when police confirmed the arrest, which Clark said took place without incident.

Parker told Eberwein he believes the results will show his blood-alcohol level was below the limit, she said.

In November, Parker and US Airways made their first moves to acquire Delta, which is in bankruptcy.

The merger would have created the largest carrier in the nation. Delta, however, fought off the deal, and convinced its creditors not to cave to US Airways.

Parker, a Paradise Valley resident, has been CEO of US Airways since 2005. He was CEO of America West Airlines before it merged with US Airways.

If convicted, Parker could be ordered to pay a $500 fine, spend from one to 10 days in jail, lose his driver’s license for 30 days and be put on probation for five years.

Three beers in two hours is intoxicating? Must've been those King Kan Thirsty-Two ouncers. Or maybe malt liquor. Ah, reminds me of high school.

He looked at USairs' books and saw the amount of debt they owe.

I doubt you'll see his mugshot in the local press . . . . after all, he's a "local business leader" . . . .

Now, if it was a regular ol' line swine stupid enough to tell the cops he was an airline pilot, it'd be splashed all over the place . . . . .

.

Yea, according to my avatar....damm..not I have to change it again, one sec..

added: ok, the date is good now

Well, if DUIs are okay for the CEO why not pilot applicants?

I wonder if he'll give himself a bonus for not crashing before he was pulled over.

So let me get this straight....

This man just spent millions of dolllars on a ridiculous merger attempt that would have ended in certain disaster for hundreds or even thousands of careers...the collateral for his arrogance at the gaming table was my career and many many others.

He had his as$ handed to him in Washington, DC on our behalf.

His airline runs on the backs of almost 5000 pilots, who despite major changes in working conditions and procedures, continue to operate thousands of daily flights without incident.

His airline runs on the long term and recent pay subsidies of the West and East operations respectively. One group has never earned above "market" wages, and the other was forced down to that level.

He took a 9 million dollar windfall from stock options (but it's not "the company's money...the market made that money") and gave bonuses to managers. At a pilot lunch recently, he answered "no" to a pointed question as to whether he thinks the pilots deserve a raise.

I have to buy my own God Dam^ hat because the company doesn't think that part in the contract is something that needs to be abided by.

I get to have my boarding priority changed for non-revving because our contract is apparantly toilet paper to Doug and his team.

What about our dam^ contract with Doug? What about our expectations for the man who leads our company? Why is it that so much is expected of me, no exceptions, yet he expects a "let's move forward together" and an "I'm sorry" will suffice when he almost pisses away my career on Delta and then drives drunk (and gets caught) the following week.

Explain to me why anyone is doing the distance learning? Explain to me why anyone is ordering a uniform?

For alot of people that will make you blow over .08. Women... even less. Most people do not realize how little alcohol it takes to be considered intoxicated. Educate yourself with a chart like this one (http://www.drunkdrivingdefense.com/general/bac.htm) and your view of what is considered drinking and driving might change. Four beers, and pretty much everyone is over the limit. Keep in mind that athlete (in great shape) liver gets rid of aprox .015 per hour. Thats not real quick.

Quote from the article with the mugshot, "Clark said officers booked Parker for suspected DUI, and then sent him home in a taxi."

Not that is protecting and serving. I'm glad they sent him home in a taxi, instead of... hmmmmm... letting him sit in the drunk tank. If your rich and get in trouble with the law, you do community service. If your poor and get in trouble you do time. If your a CEO, aparently, you get a slap on the wrist and a cab ride.

Inside info says that the 2 persons in the car were Scott Kirby and a hired "friend". Friends that Scott likes to "meat " in LAS.

Lifes little ups and downs

Looks like DP is on his way to Tent City (mandatory for DUI in Maricopa county I believe).

One day your trying to take over Delta Airlines, the next your in pink underwear (with Maricopa county jail stamped on the a$$) eating green bologna sleeping on a cot in a tent in the dessert with 2000 other losers...HILARIOUSE!!!

I'm not trying to fuel a fire here, but DUI is such a hot-button issue in this business, and management is so out of control in this business that I think this is fairly upsetting. I makes it look as if that disconnect between labor and management is actually as real as we think it is.

I think that DUI has become sort of a witch-hunt in the US in recent years, but nobody would make excuses for me if I did it(and got caught). Someone(more than one) on this board once said that we as pilots should hold ourselves to a higher standard than John Q. Public; well what about management? This was on the news radio every 10 minutes this A.M. in Atlanta. The Cox-owned news agencies are loving this.

Thanks, I'm aware of that chart. Three normal drinks should result in around .06. My statement was somewhat sarcastic in light of Doogie showing a greater than .08 blood alcohol.

My personal limit for driving is two drinks or one drink per hour, whichever is greater. Light beer and wine coolers don't count at all. (just kidding about that last part. wine coolers do count.)

I love how this is linked to the failed Delta deal. Get real people, he was playing golf. If I'm playing football or tennis no drinks because I want to be alert and enjoy it. Golf though is soooo boring being tanked is a necessity. How else can you justify s-turns in the cart and hitting each other with clubs.
