Hey y'all,

I know alot of the old Carolina boys left for Pace back when Mesa said they were shuting them down. Now they've taken some Piedmont guys lately, but there is nothing on there website.

So, any hiring rumors? Do they post jobs or is it all word of mouth?

For any Pace guys: Y'all like it over there. I've heard the pay is low, but it's gotta be better than life at Piedmont.

Peace

Why are you posting this in the "Majors" catagory? Although Pace flies 737s and a couple of 757s they are far from being a major. I left Pace five years ago for Continental Express and looked at it as a move up in career advancement.

It was at Pace that I learned the value of a good Union, because we did not have one. All schedules were assigned, not bid. FO pay was set at $24,000 a year - no more, no less. Captain pay was set at $65,000 a year - no more, no less. Most folks get tired after four, five or even six days in a row. How about three WEEKS in a row! We were given 24 hour breaks every six days, gotta love it.

All in all, I would say do not go there unless something just short of miraculous has happened in the last few years (Hooters girls aside).

Frats,

D@mn! I've talked to a couple Pace pilots at INT, but I never asked about pay (I don't think I'd get an interview anyway :D ). That's pretty wild ... flying a 733 or 752 for less than $25K a year? Double  !

Remember, that 24,000 was five years ago (per-diem was real interesting too). Also, at the time there was zero chance for upgrade to captain. The company only hired captains who had taken early retirement from USAir (mostly ex-piedmont guys), a couple from Eastern, and a Braniff guy. Most of us FOs were your average low-timers who thought, "$24K to fly a 737, where do I sign up?" Well, live and learn!

Frats,

Yeah ... if I remember correctly the two guys I spoke with a couple times were both ex-US Air and had come over in the Piedmont merger. At least one was, for sure, because he had a couple funny Piedmont stories. :D

I can imagine. :D There was a CFI at Triad who said he was getting an interview with Pace (this was 2002) and expected to get hired as soon as he got his ATP (he was short on the 1500 hours. Did Pace actually hire CFIs to the Boeings? If true, that'd be a pretty cool way to build hours for a regional or corporate gig. :D Of course ... no PIC so SWA is out. :(

Yup, I'm living proof. I was probably the most inexperienced of the bunch. It is actually a funny story about how I got to Pace.

I was originally hired by the charter side of Piedmont-Howthorne Aviation (the then parent of Pace) to fly Kingairs. Well, for some reason or another the assistant chief (a woman) decides she does not like me and wants me gone (I am still in training for the Kingair). Aparently she got passed over for a promotion to chief pilot and was trying to make the present Director of Operations miserable. Soooo, long story short, the DO moved me out of her charter department and into his airline department which of course is Pace Airlines. So, in other words, I was hired to fly a 737 to keep me from incuring the wrath of a disgruntled lower level manager :).

While I was there it was fun though, until...

Frats,

Original Question answered

For what it's worth: I have a friend who is starting with them, just got an email.

I don't know any details about the hiring process or the contract, but they definitely have a class starting soon, like next week or the beginning of April.

When I was there there was no contract. They paid you what they paid you and work rules were simply FAR 121.

Actually all majors that are currently hiring are out. You could go to Pace from a CFI position and build 5,000 hours of 737 SIC time and you will still get passed over at ATA, SWA, Jblu, Airtran, Fedex, etc. by a BE-1900 CA from a regional. I hate to see CFI's who aspire to move to a major take jobs at the likes of Pace or American Eagle because of the extremely long (if ever) upgrade. They are shooting themselves in the foot in the long run.

Agreed. Unfortunately, it took me nine months to figure that out.

Frats,

The last class (early February) had 5 pilots, all had over 5,000TT. The next class will be March 23rd, looks like 8 pilots, possibly one more class after that. First year 737 FO pay is about 33 1/2K a year. There’s a 75 hour guarantee, so it comes out in the $37-38 /hr. range somewhere. Wish I was more precise but that’s all I have right now. $1.35 per diem. Currently, they seem to be upgrading pilots in 14 to 18 months. Some senior fo’s are turning down upgrade until they can hold a crew base they want. 20 737’s (200, 300, and one 400) and 3 757’s (200). This is ALL I know, wish everyone strong tailwinds in their flying careers.

Cool story BTW. :) Did you instruct at Triad? Did you also once ferry the Pace CP somewhere in a pistin twin? I'm thinking we might know each other.

Nope, I instructed at a couple of places in south Atlanta and Montgomery, AL.

Frats,

Try www.paceairline.com, there is an email address there somehere where you can send your resume, that's what my friend did and he got a call a few months later.

AV8OR - sorry about the callsign, didn't mean to steal yours. I've been using av80r@... for several years as my back-up email address. Yours is better btw... :)
