Wow - that's a pretty incredible picture. What's the story behind it - did the right main just give, or what?

Whats louder than a Garret?

A Garret scraping it's prop on Gravel.....

I don't think the gear folded up, it looks like it broke off and went backwards. That would SUCK......

What I've *heard* is that it touched down short of the runway. That would fit, as Goodnews bay is 2800 feet and you might have a tendency to get low and slow approaching a 2800 ft runway in a Merlin. Also, if you look at the picture, you can see turning tracks in front of the airplane which look like the tracks where back taxiing aircraft turn around for takeoff. I'm fairly sure I know the guy who was flying, but it would probably be a little tacky to call him up just to satisfy my morbid curiosity.

Wierd...after hitting submit it told me the "page was unavailable" so I just exited. Now I find out I posted twice. Sorry.

Yeowch!! I thought the gear on the Merlins and Metros was pretty stout. I can't imagine pulling out my camera in this situation, but still a neat photo.

you sho' it wasn't chopped? anything is possible with Adobe nowdays...
it just seems unreal someone would just happen to have a camera right at that moment, unless it's a pretty hot spot for spotters???

I don't think so, like I said, it's a real accident, and if the info I've heard is true, I know the guy who was flying it. It only happened 4 days ago. The pic has come to me about third or fourth hand, so I don't know the story about how it was taken. I believe that it was a charter, and one of the people they were going out there to pick up stood by the runway to get a picture of the airplane touching down. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. Goodnews Bay is not a hot spot for spotters, it's a small native village a long way from nowhere. I suppose it's possible it's a fake, but if it is, a lot of work went into it

I remember that...

I used to fly out there not even 6 months ago. It can get pretty nasty. I even know who's Merlin that is....

WOW!!

Pretty quick finger on the shutter to capture that as the prop was being bent. Amazing. Just glad to read no one was hurt.

It is a real picture. A friend of mine was talking with the Director of Maint for FS. He said they landed about 200 feet short with the right main. I am supposed to get some more pictures of it, but I haven't gotten them yet.

Umm, all I get is a site called "White Pages"

Yeah, sorry, I posted the pic on a geocities page, after so many visits it shuts down for a while. Anyone have any better ideas for posting a pic?
