18 yrs ago, at the age of 19, I got caught bar hopping with my fake ID. The result was a two year suspended sentence and community service. 18 yrs later, with not even a parking ticket, I still have a “minor misdemeanor”. Is this something I need to get expunged, or something I need to divulge at a major interview?

If you can get it expunged, great, but if asked if you ever been arrested answer truthfully. As long as you don't have any further record it won't be a big deal. You learned from it, right? Trust me in that it can be good to have a nice juicy story to talk about during an interview instead of some boring no-story guy.

honesty is the best policy, just have a good lesson learned. after all you were young and it was a long time ago.

If getting caught almost 2 decades ago for something like good, old-fashioned, all-American bar-hopping on a fake ID gets you disqualified, you don't want to work for those wankers anyway.

My friend was busted when he was 19 and got youthful offender for minor in possesion and for falsely representing another person (fake id). He has completed the FBI check, police background and consulted the court house. All three came clean and was advised by an attorney that the only way an employer can access a youthful offender/sealed case was via a written letter to the judge. The attorney advised not to disclose the incident as you will admit a dent in your records and the employer will have no way to verify your statment = question marks.

Be honest if you like, if you do a search on back ground checks others advise that you can be caught. Good luck and post your results please.

Lesson learned; pay a little more for a better-quality fake.

Let me second that comment. The main concern at an interview will be your honesty and frankness about this incident. Even if it gets expunged from the official record it can still show up other places on a background check depending on how it has been dissemiated over the years. Consider reporting it on the company paperwork as being "expunged". You'll look good for reporting something you didn't technically have to and it will speak to your honesty and integrity as an adult. I imagine that many of us and possibily a few on the interview panel did the same thing as kids and just didn't get caught.

good advice. I could care less and I do interviews. People like honesty.

However, finding it out on your background check might disqualify you from the job on the spot - if not certainly tarnish your credibility..

Dont believe the "expunged" thing for a second. I have seen it first hand....consider nothing gone. ever.

I have done some hiring in the past, and I always looked twice at the "perfect" candidates. I was always wondering what the catch was...

My sentiments exactly . . . . .
