I was out doing my preflight this morning and my instructor comes early and starts asking me questions about the 172S. Like fuel capacity and usable fuel, what kinda question etc. Well then he asked me, "How many fuel tanks are in the cessna?" I laugh and say "Two" He replies "No" I was confused. Two tanks. 28 gallons each, 53 usable becasue of the gutter things, etc. I dont get it does the fuel strainer or the selector valve count. He told me to find out on my own so i decided to ask here. How many fuel tanks are in the C172S? Im confused with this...

He's probably talking about the collector tank where the fuel from both tanks collects before it goes to the engine. Your Cessna has 2 tanks, you are correct. Next time he asks you something stupid like that, ask him how many rivets are on the fuselage.

He's a dork. You should give him the old Trump, "You're fired." Complete with hand gesture, of course.

Flem, I do not have a 172S manual but my R172K manual says on page 7-21 (Fuel System) "The standard system have two vented fuel tanks" then below this it says ..."systems include ... fuel reservoir tank, ...

Ask your instructor to define "fuel tank". If your instructor thinks the reservior tank is a fuel tank, ask him/her how much fuel does it hold and is it useable fuel? IMHO it is a dumb question.

Knowing the fuel system is a good thing unless he is trying to impress you with his knowledge (or lack of it). Was this a systems review or was he busting your chops?

Or just ask him :

"if your flying inverted, backward, on the ILS backcourse, will the HSI have reverse sensing?"

2 tanks. Thats it.

I dislike instructors who come up with stupid questions to make them seem more knowledgable than they really are about their aircraft.

Might cost you a few extra $$.

Tell her she's fired for being stupid.

Man, what an ass. Just ask him this, "other than knowing how much gas it has, what is usable and non usable, what does it matter?" Think about it. You know how much u have or don't have, u can't fabricate an extra one midair if you needed one. Hell, even if you could fabricate one on the ground, you couldn't install it unless the FAA gives u approval. I am an MEII and a check airman at my company on the Cit X, I would never ask such a stupid question as this. Really, if the sh!t hit the fan, 2,4 or a hundred tanks, WHAT DOES IT MATTER? It is just a totally different mindset when u get to jets. I hope he flies with me if he makes it this far.

I understand why he asked a question like this (to get you into the books) but this is one of the worst examples of a dumb question I have heard in a long time.
