Obtaining Ground Instructor Certificates

hey all,

Just curious what some of your experiences were when obtaining your ground instructor certificates. I've heard that you simply can't mail your test results; you have to physically go to the FSDO. Were you administered a "mini checkride" or was it a quick in and out, if so, what FSDO was this?

It's easy.

I took the test, called the FSDO, made an appointment, went in, waited for an inspector, got my temp and left.

Total time at the FSDO 10 minutes...total time talking with the inspector, uh...3-5 mins. I'm sure they can ask you questions...but with the staffing situation at most FSDOs, they probably won't...bigger fish to fry.

The only reason you have to go in is to fill out and sign an 8710 and show your ID. There will be no questions - not part of the drill.

Own piece of mind...fill more space on a resume....a shiny new piece of plastic....many reasons

If you believe that the oral is based on your knowledge test results then obtaining a ground instructor cert. "hides" your FOI score.

I took the Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) test just before I took my CFI written. I used it as a "test prep". I got it graded, scored something like and 84%, paid the $$ for the CFI written, sat back down and took it. I got a better score for my efforts. AND I got my AGI certificate.
Even if you don't study any of the glider/rotorcraft stuff that can come up on the AGI test, you'll probably pass it.

Not only that, but if your FOI test is nearing it's 24 month expiration date, taking it to the FSDO and getting your ground instructor cert extends the amount of time you have to get your CFI initial without re-taking the FOI test.
